For example, the Deuter Guide backpack allows you to carry up to 50 litres of gear with its expandable 8-liter volume. Perfect for tackling multiple peaks over several days.

Important Features for Versatile Mountaineering Backpack

Ice Axe Holders

Typically located at the back of the backpack, these attachment systems allow you to secure 1 or 2 ice axes quickly and easily. While the design may vary between brands, the principle is the same: the ice axe is positioned head-down with the blade facing the centre of the backpack. Basic models use a simple loop for the head and a strap to secure the shaft. More advanced models may feature clip-on straps for the head and shaft, along with a blade guard to prevent accidents and premature wear.

Gear Loops

Some backpacks include gear loops on the hip belt. These loops complement the ones on your harness and allow you to offload some of your quickdraws, ice screws, and spare carabiners onto your backpack for better carrying comfort.

Haul Loop

For particularly technical sections, it’s best to lighten your load and leave your gear at the base of the climb. Once the anchor is set, you can haul your mountaineering backpack using a special reinforced haul loop designed to withstand friction and heavy loads.
