How to choose the right bouldering shoes?
This is a highly subjective question as every climber has their own climbing style and sensitivity. Some prefer soft shoes that perfectly conform to the shape of the hold or rock, offering impeccable grip but finding their limits on small edges, while others prefer a rigid tip that ensures maximum precision on technical holds but is slightly less effective when it comes to grip.
An important point to consider is the ease of putting on and taking off your bouldering shoes. Between attempts on a boulder, during rest time, it is always nice to be able to relax your toes.
Versatile Velcro shoes like the Katana or Solution from La Sportiva, the Nebula from EB, or the Quantix from Scarpa will allow you to push your limits in bouldering while also giving you the opportunity to do some sport climbing from time to time.
What shape should bouldering shoes be?
When starting out in climbing and bouldering, the shape of the shoe is not the primary criterion to consider but it becomes increasingly important as the climber progresses technically.
You can then pay particular attention to the downturn and asymmetry of the model to find the ideal one.
Bouldering shoes downturn or camber:
Generally, the more pronounced the camber, the more efficient the shoe and the more precision it offers at the toe area. Camber also affects the stiffness of the model. Shoes with no or little camber are recommended for beginners who primarily seek comfort, while highly cambered bouldering shoes are for experienced climbers seeking performance.
Choosing the right asymmetry:
The asymmetry of a climbing shoe increases the power on the big toe. While this criterion is not relevant for beginner climbers, it is for experts. You can then choose between 4 levels of asymmetry: none / low / medium / high.
Combined with the various possible cambers, you get a really wide choice of bouldering shoes in terms of precision, feel, and rigidity. Every climber can then find the perfect bouldering shoe that fits their foot and is suited to their skill level.
If you start finding your shoes a bit too imprecise at the toe and they are the right size, it might be time to try moving up a level by trying a pair of more cambered and more aggressive rock shoes.
