How to choose the right climbing shoe for crags?
To choose the right climbing shoe for crags, you must first consider your skill level.
When starting out, it is unnecessary to invest in highly technical and rigid shoes with pronounced camber, which are also expensive. No, when discovering outdoor climbing, it is important to prioritise comfort to be able to climb for several hours without pain.
Once you gain experience and start climbing seriously, and the shoes no longer cause any discomfort, then you can start looking at more performance-oriented models with more camber and asymmetry.
Which camber to choose for crag climbing shoes?
The pronounced camber of a climbing shoe provides greater power at the toe area by redirecting some of the energy to the heel. The more you press on the toe, the more you feel the climbing shoe tighten around the heel. A shoe with strong camber makes it much easier to stand on tiny holds. On the other hand, you will have to get used to the shoe's aggressive feel in the heel.
If you climb outdoors often, it is a good idea to have two pairs of shoes in your backpack. A versatile pair like the Katana, which is comfortable for warming up and can also be used as a multi-pitch climbing shoe, and a more aggressive pair that you can use when tackling harder routes.
