Rock shoes for multi-pitch climbing
Multi-pitch climbing is a climbing discipline which requires to climb several pitches on the same cliff. The leader must wait for the second climber to reach the belay stance before leading the next pitch. As a consequence, multi-pitch climbing takes a lot of time. Completing a multi-pitch climb can take an entire day. Some legendary multi-pitch routes, like those in Yosemite, even require multiple days of climbing, which involves spending the night on the cliff face. To enjoy multi-pitch climbing, you need climbing shoes that are both technical and comfortable enough to be worn for hours. Our experts have selected climbing shoes suitable for multi-pitch climbing for you:

What are the features of good multi-pitch climbing shoes?
As a rule of thumb, any crag climbing shoe can be used for multi-pitch climbing. The main characteristic of multi-pitch climbing lies in the duration, which can range from several hours to several days. Therefore, foot comfort must be taken into account to successfully reach the top, as there is nothing worse than aggressive shoes that are too uncomfortable to get through a multi-pitch route.
To avoid this kind of discomfort, it is preferable to be able to remove your shoes or at least loosen them and fold the heel to put them in slipper mode while belaying the second climber. This way, you can rest your feet half of the time.
Velcro models are particularly suitable for multi-pitch climbing. You can easily loosen them as soon as you reach the belay stance and put them back on in a few seconds before setting off again.
Another important factor to consider when multi-pitch climbing is foot swelling throughout the day. Just like hiking, it is not uncommon for your feet to increase by half a size or even a full size after a few hours of climbing, especially in hot weather. Therefore, it is better to choose multi-pitch climbing shoes that are at least half a size larger than your usual climbing shoes.
