Choosing Your Single Rope for Climbing
When selecting your single rope for climbing, several criteria should be considered.
- Length: In general, a climbing rope measures between 50 and 80 meters, with 70 meters being the most popular length.
- Diameter: A single rope has a diameter between 9.4 and 10.5 mm. A rope with a larger diameter offers increased safety for belaying.
- Type of climbing: The single rope is ideal for sport climbing on single-pitch crags thanks to its ease of use. It can also be used for multi-pitch routes, although a half rope is often more practical for rope management and longer rappels.
- Treatment: Some single ropes have a treatment that gives them increased resistance to wear and weather conditions.
Difference Between Single and Half Rope
The half rope, unlike the single rope, consists of two separate strands that are always used together. It generally has a smaller diameter (8 to 8.5 mm), making it a lighter option for the same length. This is the traditional choice for multi-pitch routes, especially in mountaineering, trad climbing, and glacier travel, where the half rope offers greater safety and flexibility. In fact, both strands can be clipped alternately to reduce rope drag on the climb, and if one strand fails, the other acts as a backup.
Using a Dynamic Single Rope in Mountaineering
In the context of mountaineering, using a single rope offers several advantages. Its versatility is one of its main strengths, allowing use on both glacier and rock terrain. Its abrasion resistance is also a key factor, reducing the risk of rope failure in the event of a fall over an edge.
- Handling: Easier to handle than a half rope, the single rope requires only one strand for both climber and belayer.
- Packing: It offers a very compact pack size, which is a real asset for long climbs.
For snow or ice routes, it is important to choose a rope with a hydrophobic treatment. This treatment prevents water from penetrating the fibers, so the rope retains all its technical and dynamic properties.
Buying Guide: Petzl, Beal, Millet...
When it comes to quality and reliability, several brands stand out in the climbing world: Petzl, Beal, Mammut, Edelrid, Millet...
-
Petzl is known for its versatile and durable ropes. The Volta Guide 9.0mm is appreciated for its lightness, compactness, and Guide UIAA Dry treatment that resists moisture. On the other hand, the Arial 9.5mm is aimed at experienced climbers thanks to its Duratec Dry treatment, which offers longevity and performance.
-
Beal offers a wide range of single ropes. The Beal Tiger 10mm model is often recommended for its robustness and versatility.
-
Millet, for its part, offers ropes designed to withstand the demands of various activities. The Alpha Fluide Protect 10.3 mm is a popular choice for its durability and reliability.
Each of these brands offers a variety of ropes in terms of length, diameter, and treatment. Your final choice will depend on your activity, experience, and personal preferences.
