The eco-design of Burton snowboard pants
Donna Carpenter, the CEO of Burton Snowboards and widow of the late Jake Burton Carpenter, is both a business woman and an activist. She continues to develop the brand, with committed goals such as reducing the brand's environmental impact and increasing the role of women in the company. With regard to the environment, the brand is developing the eco-design of its products, with, for example, the Bluesign certifications for Burton snow pants, recycled fibres and a water-repellent treatment without harmful chemicals.
Bluesign certification
Bluesign certification validates that the products are manufactured with responsible resource management, do not pollute the air or water, and use chemicals that do not endanger the environment or the health of workers and consumers. For the winter of 2020-2021, 98% of Burton's outdoor clothing is Bluesign certified, and the brand is aiming at 100% for the coming winter.
Recycled polyester
Using recycled polyester fibre instead of ""new"" polyester fibre saves a lot of resources, uses less energy and produces 15-45% less greenhouse gases. For the winter of 2021-2022, Burton aims to use 50% recycled fibre in all its polyester consumption. This is an ambitious target, given that for the winter of 2020-2021, the brand used 24% recycled fibres out of its total polyester consumption.
DWR PFC-Free treatment
Burton is gradually removing harmful chemicals from its Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatments. For the winter of 2020-2021, the brand has already equipped 79% of its treated products with a durable water-repellent treatment without perfluorocarbons, the environmentally harmful products used in conventional water-repellent treatments.
