What you need to know about cross-country ski jackets:
Most cross-country ski jackets have a very similar design, a front side insulated by a windproof membrane, and a stretch back for ventilation during exercise to prevent overheating. It is important to realise that cross-country ski jackets are not very warm, because the practice itself requires a lot of muscular and cardiac work which favours the rise in temperature and perspiration. Some models are obviously warmer than others, but there is nothing comparable to an alpine ski jacket. A cross-country ski jacket must allow you to have a maximum of thermal comfort and limit perspiration during the effort. It is important to know that the basic heat supply must also be provided by the thermal undergarment and the top of the suit for those who wear it.
How to choose a cross-country ski jacket?
Your choice will be dictated above all by your program of use according to your profile of skier, whether you are more of a walker, sportsman or competitor. The important thing is not to make a mistake in your choice of clothing. If you are a rather quiet skier who goes out in walking and nature mode, a cross-country jacket a little warmer will be welcome. For more sporty skiers, for long and intense outings, it's better to choose a light garment that promotes thermoregulation during effort. Of course, this statement should be qualified because it is also necessary to do according to the temperatures. But for classic seasonal temperatures, between 0 and -5°C, which are the most frequent, this is perfectly valid.
What is the difference between one cross-country jacket and another?
Even if the constructions are similar, all jackets are not identical. First of all there are the cuts, more or less close to the body according to the models or ranges. Usually the higher you go up the range the better the jacket fits. There are also the technologies and fabrics used such as membranes which are not all the same and whose manufacturing costs can vary greatly. The fabric used and the mesh can also have a significant impact on the quality of the jacket and of course the price of the finished product. Not all brands use the same materials or techniques according to their quality criteria and their vision of what a cross-country ski jacket should be.
