How to choose: cross-country ski pole buying guide
- Materials: aluminium is ideal for beginners, while carbon fibre provides superior stiffness and lightness.
- Grips: cork handles deliver better comfort than basic plastic ones.
- Straps: click-in systems allow quick release, while traditional straps offer more adjustability.
- Shaft weight: around 200 g for a 155 cm aluminium pole, 150 g for carbon model of the same length.
- Stiffness: test the shaft flex; a pole that’s too soft reduces power transfer.
- Baskets: choose wide baskets for deep snow, narrower ones for groomed trails and skating.
- Compatibility: check the shaft diameter (usually 16 mm) if you plan to replace grips or straps later.
What type of cross-country skier are you?
Buying a pair of cross-country poles isn’t complicated – you just need to identify your needs and the technique you intend to practise (skating or classic) to select the right length. Depending on the range and intended use, materials and components vary, which explains the price differences. You can filter by category in our menu to find the models best suited to your level – leisure, sport, or race/expert.
- Leisure poles are designed for occasional use and for skiers seeking comfort and forgiveness, with less rigid shafts.
- Sport poles target a broad audience of skiers; they’re slightly stiffer and lighter, with a larger proportion of carbon to optimise power transfer and pole return.
- Race/Expert poles are built for intensive use and experienced skiers. Most feature ultra-light, 100% carbon shafts offering exceptional stiffness to maximise every push.
Size: how to choose the right cross-country pole length
The correct pole length depends primarily on the technique practised.
For classic cross-country skiing, the recommended length is approximately 83% of the skier’s height (0.83 × height). This ratio ensures a smooth motion and a good balance between propulsion and comfort on set tracks.
For skating, poles are longer to maximise simultaneous push and power. The ideal length is around 89% of the skier’s height (0.89 × height).
Athletes seeking maximum efficiency sometimes go slightly longer, while beginners may shorten by one or two centimetres for greater stability and control.
Size chart: pole length according to skier height
| Skier height (cm) | Classic poles (≈ 0.83 × height) | Skating poles (≈ 0.89 × height) |
|---|---|---|
| 150 | 125 cm | 134 cm |
| 155 | 129 cm | 138 cm |
| 160 | 133 cm | 142 cm |
| 165 | 137 cm | 147 cm |
| 170 | 141 cm | 151 cm |
| 175 | 145 cm | 156 cm |
| 180 | 149 cm | 160 cm |
| 185 | 153 cm | 165 cm |
| 190 | 158 cm | 169 cm |
| 195 | 162 cm | 173 cm |
| 200 | 166 cm | 178 cm |
Skating and classic poles by technique
Each Nordic skiing style has its own demands regarding pole length and dynamic behaviour.
Skating poles, being longer, meet the needs of lateral propulsion and a more explosive rhythm. Classic poles, slightly shorter, are better suited to the alternating motion and pendulum swing of the technique.
In terms of materials, stiffness and responsiveness are key for both disciplines: carbon is the preferred choice for both skating and classic, as it ensures efficient power transfer and optimal lightness.
The main difference lies in comfort and ergonomics: grips and straps designed for each motion (higher and stiffer for skating, softer and more forgiving for classic) help support the specific movement pattern of each technique.
High-performance skating poles
For those seeking maximum performance in skating, only technically advanced poles will do. Glisshop’s premium models feature ultra-light 100% carbon shafts weighing under 140 g for a length of 155 cm. This construction delivers exceptional stiffness, converting every push into pure propulsion.
Ergonomics are crucial in these elite models. Natural cork grips fit the hand perfectly, while click-in straps allow instant release. To calculate the ideal pole height, simply multiply your height by 0.89 – a straightforward yet essential formula for optimising your skating technique.
These racing poles stand out for their ability to return stored energy during flexion. Every detail matters: aerodynamic baskets, sharpened carbide tips, and perfectly balanced shafts.
Classic and Nordic touring poles
The classic and Nordic touring disciplines require poles that prioritise comfort and versatility over long distances. Glisshop’s models use aluminium or composite shafts, providing the durability needed for extended outings across varied terrain.
To determine the correct length, use the formula: skier’s height × 0.83, roughly 30 cm shorter than your total height. This allows a natural pendulum motion, ideal for Nordic touring where endurance outweighs explosiveness.
Many of these poles feature natural cork grips, offering superior thermal insulation and consistent grip even with gloves. Traditional removable straps make it easy to pause and adjust your gear during long backcountry sessions.
Junior and beginner poles
Learning cross-country skiing requires poles adapted to young skiers and adults new to the sport. At Glisshop, our junior models such as the One Way Diamond Jr are perfect for progression, thanks to their durable fibreglass construction and easy handling.
Discover our children’s and junior cross-country ski poles
Aluminium shafts are the ideal choice for beginners. This material forgives technical mistakes while withstanding frequent falls during learning. Ergonomic grips improve handling, while traditional straps make it easy to put on even with thick gloves.
For young skiers, brands like Swix offer adjustable models that grow with the child. The correct length is simple to find: the pole should reach under the armpit for classic, and up to the chin for skating.
Accessories and spare parts
Pole bags and storage
Protecting your poles during transport is essential to maintain their condition. Rigid pole bags provide optimal protection with reinforced inner tubes, particularly recommended for high-end carbon models.
Most bags can hold between one and five pairs depending on your needs. A single bag is perfect for individual use, while family-sized versions make group transport easier. Padded shoulder straps and a top pocket for tips and straps add extra convenience.
Some models can be attached directly to ski bags, creating an integrated transport system. This modular solution makes travel by car or air much simpler.
Replacement straps, grips and baskets
Wear and tear or accidental damage can affect your pole spare parts. At Glisshop, we stock all necessary replacement components to extend the lifespan of your Nordic equipment.
Straps are constantly under tension and may stretch or tear over time. Replacing a worn strap instantly improves energy transfer and skiing comfort. Always check compatibility with your grip diameter before buying.
Baskets should be chosen according to snow conditions: narrow for groomed trails, wider for fresh snow – it’s worth keeping several sizes on hand. Cork grips may also need replacing after several seasons of intensive use.
Carbide tips and ferrules
Carbide tips are the most heavily used part of your Nordic poles. Tungsten carbide ensures outstanding resistance to abrasion across all surfaces – from tarmac to rock and ice.
This technology provides superior grip compared to traditional steel tips. You’ll gain precision in your push-off, particularly valuable during powerful skating phases or on hilly terrain.
At Glisshop, our replacement tips fit standard diameters from 8 to 10 mm depending on the brand. Replacement is easy with a bit of specialist glue, allowing you to give your poles a second life instead of buying a new pair.
