Columbia sportswear brand’s history

The history of this iconic brand began in 1938 when a family fleeing Nazi Germany settled in Portland, USA and bought a small hat factory. A lot has happened since then, but the motto of the founder Gert Boyle still inspires the development of the brand: ‘It's perfect, but you can do better’. The Columbia Hat Company became Columbia Sportswear Company in 1960, at the same time as the brand started manufacturing its own products. Columbia has made its mark in the sports and outdoor industry on numerous occasions, for example in 1986 with its Bugaboo parka, which revolutionised the equipment of alpine skiers, by developing Omni-Heat Reflective technology in 2010 consisting of small silver dots that reflect body heat, or in 2016 by offering a rain garment that is both waterproof and breathable.

Today, Tim Boyle, son of Gert Boyle, is Columbia’s CEO, and Joe Boyle, the grandson is the president. Columbia remains a family business.
