What is the best climbing shoe for indoor climbing? How to choose?
Whether it's indoor or at a crag, it's never the climbing shoe that makes the climber. To enjoy climbing and progress, you must first choose your shoe according to your skill level. Resin is really aggressive on rubber, so it would be a shame to destroy a nice pair of climbing shoes with high-performance rubber in just a few sessions by constantly slipping.
Which climbing shoe for a beginner indoors?
When starting indoor climbing (or even outdoors), you generally don't know how to place your feet or position yourself correctly. You slip and slide on the resin, leaving nice rubber marks on the climbing wall. For your first pair of indoor climbing shoes, it's best to opt for a model with good value for money, versatile enough for both slabs and overhangs. This type of beginner climbing shoe should also offer maximum comfort so that the climber can get used to the special fit of this type of gear.
Models like La Sportiva's Tarantula, EB's Electron, or Millet's Easy Up are highly recommended. They are reasonably priced and allow you to start with top-brand equipment and real rubber worthy of the name. In terms of size, there's no need to choose something too tight. You need to be comfortable and familiarise yourself with the equipment. The shoe should not hinder your progress.
Which climbing shoe to progress and climb to the next level?
You have mastered the basics of climbing, you climb in the 5th grade and now aim for the 6th. You can start looking at slightly more aggressive climbing shoes while opting for an optimal size that fits well. When it comes to size, the idea is not to take two sizes below your usual size but rather to look for effective toe support and no slipping, all while having maximum sensations and feel for the holds.
Regarding construction, you can start looking at higher-end models with more effective rubber and a more pronounced camber. However, you should still retain some comfort. Versatile models like La Sportiva's Katana, Scarpa's Quantix, or Black Diamond's Method will be perfect.
Which climbing shoe to choose for working on technical routes and big overhangs?
For every route, there is a climbing shoe, or almost... When you start climbing hard, you can consider multiple types of shoes with different characteristics and shapes. Warming-up shoes, versatile and comfortable, slab shoes with excellent toe support and great precision, and overhang shoes allowing effective toe hooks and heel hooks.
In any case, having shoes with more downturn and some asymmetry ensures better support on tiny holds, optimal heel support, and greater power transmission to the big toe.
Sensations are quite subjective. Every climber ultimately prefers this or that brand or model. What is certain is that you must first and foremost seek confidence in your footholds to be calm and climb with confidence. The right indoor climbing shoe is the one that will allow you to have good sensations, feel the holds without the shoe tip bending, have grip on balance holds, and all this without your feet hurting too much.
