The Petzl Gully Hammer ice axe is very lightweight and strong. It is also adjustable thanks to its Trigrest hand rest.

Both the head and the shaft are Category 1 certified (formerly Type B). This type of ice axe is well suited for progressing on snow and ice and is perfectly capable of building snow anchors. However, they reach their limits on rock, where a Category 2 (formerly Type T) axe would be more appropriate.

Petzl has also equipped the Gully with a Trigrest hand rest that slides along the shaft and locks in place wherever you choose. Perfect for either full-hand grip or for a secure index finger hold on technical moves.

Adze or Hammer Version?

Most Petzl ice axes are available in both adze and hammer versions. But what’s the actual difference in use?

Adze version: This is the most commonly used. The adze lets you quickly dig into hard snow and build snow anchors. It can also be used to carve steps if needed.
Hammer version: With a minimal hammer surface, this version is useful for re-driving ageing pitons or placing a peg when necessary.

Customisation Options

If you find the Gully a little too light for ice, you can enhance its performance by adding weights (modular pick weights) on either side of the pick using small screws. This extra mass increases striking power, allowing for better penetration and more secure placements.

Our Opinion on the Petzl Gully

The Petzl Gully is an ultra-lightweight ice axe with an aluminium shaft and a sturdy, efficient banana-shaped steel pick. With its compact 45 cm length, it fits easily onto your backpack. Ergonomically, Petzl has thought of everything, including the adjustable Trigrest that slides along the shaft. You can reposition it as needed depending on the terrain—whether for a more stable cane-style grip or for secure hooking with your index finger on steeper climbs. There’s also a cap at the bottom of the shaft that improves support in soft snow and helps prevent snow from clogging the handle. The lower shaft is grooved for excellent grip, with or without gloves.

Our verdict: At just 280g, the Gully is perfect for ski touring, glacier hiking, and steep skiing where every gram counts.
