Salomon all-mountain: Stance and QST, two ways to explore varied terrain
Choosing a Salomon all-mountain ski first means deciding how important piste performance is to you. The Salomon Stance range is better suited to skiers who like to carve their turns, maintain grip on hard snow and keep a stable ski underfoot as speed increases. It remains relevant for the side-country and transformed snow, but its behaviour stays closer to an alpine skiing feel.
The Salomon QST range is aimed at skiers looking for more manoeuvrability and ease when the terrain becomes uneven. Its strengths come through in crud, ungroomed sections and softer snow, with a feel that is generally less locked-in than the Stance models. The widest versions, however, are closer to freeride skis than to a balanced choice between piste and piste-edge use.
Choose according to your skiing style, not just the terrain
Stance will be the more coherent choice if you apply strong pressure, like holding an edge and want a ski that stays composed at a decent pace. QST will suit you better if you prefer to pivot the ski, vary your lines and retain ease of handling when the snow deteriorates.
Ability level alone is not enough to separate the two families. An advanced skier may prefer a QST for its freedom of movement, while an intermediate skier who is comfortable on groomers may feel more confident on an accessible Stance model. The waist width, stiffness and length of the ski should therefore remain consistent with your build and how physically committed you are when skiing.
