Glisshop tips to help you choose correctly

The main selection criteria are:

  1. your level and riding style (these determine the flex)
  2. your comfort when putting the boots on, which then determines the closure system
  3. your shoe size
  4. checking compatibility with your bindings

Flex: the number one criterion

Flex shapes your entire experience on snow. Too soft for your ability, and you’ll lack turning precision. Too stiff, and you’ll tire quickly and lose fluidity in freestyle.

Soft models suit beginners and freestyle riders, while stiffer boots are for experienced riders in freeride or carving.

From freestyle to freeride, including all-mountain, Glisshop offers boots suited to every riding style. Men’s, women’s or kids’, beginner or expert: our selection covers all abilities and all disciplines, with the model that matches your riding style exactly.

  • Soft (1–4): ideal for freestyle and beginner riders. They’re more forgiving, so mistakes are easier to recover from.
  • Medium (4–7): perfect for all-mountain and versatile riding. Effective in all conditions, they suit intermediate riders who like to switch between groomers, off-piste and park.
  • Stiff (7–10): for experienced riders looking for responsiveness and control in freeride or carving. Demanding, but exceptionally precise. Browse stiff snowboard boots.

The closure system: a matter of comfort and routine

The choice of lacing directly affects the comfort and precision of your boots. The best system is the one you’ll use properly on every session; a lace that’s not tightened properly because your fingers are cold means a wasted day. Glisshop offers all current systems:

BOA

The BOA system provides quick, even tightening thanks to one or more micro-adjustable dials. The dial allows precise micro-adjustment even with gloves on. Double BOA (one dial per zone) is the most advanced system on the market.

Speed lacing

Speed lacing tightens the boot in a single movement. Simple and effective, it suits riders who want to get into their boots quickly without sacrificing support.

Traditional laces

Traditional lacing remains the benchmark for purists. It allows custom adjustment zone by zone, for support that’s perfectly adapted to your foot shape and riding style.

Hybrid laces + BOA

The best compromise if you’re undecided. The lace system provides overall foot hold, while the BOA dial fine-tunes and locks down the upper section.

Size: slightly too small is better than too large

The liner compresses by about half a size with use. A brand-new boot should therefore feel slightly snug: toes touching the front, and the heel not lifting when you flex forward. If you’re between two sizes, choose the smaller one.

To go further on fitting and how boots should feel on your feet, look at our comprehensive guide: how to try on snowboard boots.

Compatibility with your bindings

In most cases, boots and bindings are interchangeable regardless of brand. Two systems are exceptions:

  • Burton Step On: Step On boots and bindings only, no compatibility with the rest of the market.
  • K2 Clicker: same logic, closed system.

If you already have bindings, check their technology before finalising your boot choice.

Snowboard boots FAQ

How do you know which type of snowboard boots to choose based on your level and riding style?

Flex is the first thing to look at. Beginner riders and freestylers are better off choosing a soft flex (1–4): more forgiving, it handles mistakes better and makes progression easier. For versatile all-mountain riding, a medium flex (4–7) covers most situations. Experienced riders in freeride or carving should opt for a stiff flex (7–10) to gain precision and responsiveness. If in doubt, our advisers are available by chat, phone or in store to point you towards the right model.

What’s the difference between a BOA system and laces on snowboard boots?

The BOA system tightens in seconds using a micro-adjustable dial, which can be adjusted even with gloves on. Traditional laces take longer but allow precise zone-by-zone adjustment. Neither is objectively better: it all depends on your preferences. If you put your boots on often or in very cold conditions, BOA is more convenient. If you like to fine-tune the fit, laces are still hard to beat. Both systems are durable and repairable.

How can you avoid foot pain in snowboard boots?

The main cause is the wrong size or incorrect tightening. A new boot should feel slightly snug. Standing up with the boot tightened, your toe should just brush the front without any pressure points, and your heel should not lift when you flex forward. A flex that’s too stiff for your ability can also cause pain: if you’re forcing it to compensate for a lack of technique, the boot is working against you.

How do you avoid getting the wrong size?

The best thing to do is measure your foot in centimetres: this is known as Mondo Point, the reference sizing system used by all boot brands. Once you know this measurement, you’ve got a reliable starting point. Bear in mind that the liner compresses by about half a size with use: a slightly snug brand-new boot is normal. If you’re unsure, our advisers are there to guide you before purchase, by phone, chat, email or in store. And if the size isn’t right when it arrives, returns are straightforward and hassle-free.
