Choosing a ski jacket for your preferred discipline
If you are an occasional skier who mainly heads out on sunny days, you do not need a ski jacket offering extremely high levels of waterproofing and insulation. Most ski and snowboard jackets are versatile enough for both the ski area and off-piste terrain. For snowpark riders, there are anorak-style jackets, hoodies and parkas. Freeride skiers and snowboarders tackling deep powder, as well as ski tourers and splitboarders, can choose from ski jackets and trousers designed for these different disciplines, keeping them warm and dry whatever the conditions. The three-layer system: base layer, down jacket or fleece, and ski jacket
Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly. Even when the weather appears settled, a blue sky can suddenly fill with thick cloud that rapidly shrouds the terrain and obscures all your landmarks. It can take only a short time for your surroundings to change completely.
Contrary to popular belief, simply piling on layer after layer of clothing is not enough to keep warm in the mountains. The answer is the simple yet effective three-layer system. Three layers, yes, but not just any three. Here is how it works.
The first layer should be a technical base layer, worn next to the skin without necessarily being skin-tight. Made from synthetic fibres, merino wool or a carefully selected blend of the two, it wicks perspiration away without causing a chilling sensation. This is why cotton should be avoided.
The second layer, also known as the mid-layer, provides insulation from the cold. Depending on the conditions, this could be a fleece, which is usually made from synthetic materials. It could also be an insulated jacket filled with synthetic fibres or natural down.
The third layer protects you from the elements. This is your ski jacket, which must be waterproof and breathable as well as windproof.
Ski jacket waterproofing
Gone are the days of huge, bulky anoraks and jackets. Leading brands now offer highly functional ski and snowboard clothing equipped with cutting-edge technology. Lightweight, waterproof, breathable and insulated, these new-generation ski jackets bear little resemblance to their predecessors. Who has not heard of Gore-Tex membranes? Although the brand dominated this field for many years, numerous other membrane technologies have since emerged. Innovation shows no sign of slowing down, and we are always delighted to showcase the latest developments each season—or almost every season.
These waterproof and breathable membranes offer varying waterproof ratings to suit different activities. Ratings include 5,000 mm, 10,000 mm, 15,000 mm, 20,000 mm and even 28,000 mm or more. The principle is simple: the membrane is made from a microporous material with pores of a precise diameter. These microscopic openings are too small for water droplets to pass through, yet large enough to allow moisture vapour to escape. This keeps out snow, rain and sleet while allowing perspiration to be released. It is remarkably effective.
Washing your Gore-Tex ski jacket
For a waterproof and breathable membrane to work correctly, its pores must remain clear and the fabrics must be clean. You therefore need to clean your ski jacket from time to time. It can safely be machine washed, provided you follow the specified temperature. Always adhere carefully to the brand’s instructions on one of the care labels sewn inside the garment. When putting your ski jacket in the washing machine, consider adding a Gore-Tex reproofing treatment to restore the durable water-repellent properties of the outer fabric.
Freeride ski jackets, ski touring jackets and more: make the right choice with Glisshop, the winter sports specialist
If you go freeriding or ski touring, you may already have noticed this phenomenon. In particularly severe weather, your jacket may become covered in an increasingly thick, even layer of white frost. This simply means your insulated outerwear is doing its job and efficiently transferring perspiration to the outside. In intense cold, the water vapour immediately freezes on the surface. This frozen layer must be removed so that your technical jacket or coat retains its full breathability.
Every ski jacket has two key specifications: a waterproof rating and a breathability rating. Both are crucial when selecting a model suited to your discipline. For downhill skiing, you can opt for a mid-range jacket. However, if you enjoy freeriding or are a keen uphill traveller on ski tours, it is best to choose a model with excellent waterproofing and a high level of breathability.
Choosing a snowboard jacket
Membrane waterproofing and breathability are just as important for snowboarding as they are for skiing. Most ski jackets can therefore also be used for snowboarding. Besides providing protection, they must be practical, allowing you to ride comfortably in the best possible conditions without restricting your freedom of movement. Snowboard jackets and ski jackets with a lining or integrated insulation are particularly comfortable.
Whether snowboarding or skiing, choosing a jacket with plenty of pockets can make a real difference. An increasing number of models feature a lift-pass pocket on the forearm or shoulder, a waterproof chest pocket and internal compartments for your smartphone and goggles. Some even include an integrated microfibre cloth for cleaning your sunglasses and ski-goggle lens.
