Choosing a Ski Jacket to Suit Your Riding Style

If you’re an occasional skier who prefers sunny days, there’s no need for an ultra-technical ski jacket in terms of waterproofing and insulation. Most ski or snowboard coats are versatile, perfect for use both on groomed runs and off-piste. For riders who spend time in the terrain park, there are anoraks, hoodies, and parkas. For freeride skiers and snowboarders tackling deep powder, as well as ski tourers and splitboarders, there are ski jackets and trousers designed for these disciplines that will keep you warm and dry whatever the conditions. At Glisshop, you’ll find complete collections for men, women, and children to suit every need.

The 3-Layer Principle: Base Layer, Mid Layer, Ski Coat

In the mountains, weather conditions can change very quickly. A clear blue sky can suddenly fill with thick cloud that hides the terrain and alters visibility. Sometimes it only takes a short while for the environment to be completely transformed.

Contrary to popular belief, simply piling on clothes is not the solution to staying warm. The answer lies in the 3-layer system, simple yet effective. Three layers, yes—but not just any three. Here’s how it works.

The first layer is a technical base layer worn next to the skin, without needing to be skin-tight. Made from synthetic fibres, merino wool, or a blend of the two, it wicks sweat away, preventing chills. This is why cotton should be avoided.

The second, or mid layer, provides insulation. Depending on conditions, this can be a fleece—usually made from synthetic fabrics—or an insulated jacket made from synthetic fill or natural down.

The third layer is the shell, protecting you from the elements. This is the ski jacket, which must be not only windproof but also waterproof and breathable.

The Waterproofing of a Ski Jacket

Gone are the days of bulky, heavy anoraks. Today’s leading brands offer highly functional ski and snowboard coats at the cutting edge of technology. Lightweight, waterproof, breathable, and insulated, these modern ski jackets have nothing in common with their old-fashioned predecessors. Who hasn’t heard of Gore-Tex membranes? Once alone in the field, Gore-Tex now faces strong competition from many other waterproof-breathable membranes. Innovation never stops, and we are pleased to bring you the latest developments each new season.

These waterproof-breathable membranes offer different waterproof ratings, adapted to your style of riding. They range from 5,000 mm, 10,000 mm, 15,000 mm, 20,000 mm and even up to 28,000 mm. The principle: the membrane is made of microporous material with pores of a specific diameter. These pores are too small to let water molecules through but large enough for moisture vapour to escape. So snow, rain, and sleet stay out, while perspiration is released. It’s extremely effective!

Washing a Gore-Tex Ski Jacket

For your waterproof-breathable membrane to function correctly, the pores must remain clear and the fabric clean. This means you need to wash your ski jacket from time to time. A machine wash at the temperature recommended on the care label is perfectly fine. Always follow the brand’s instructions on the inside label carefully. When you put your ski jacket in the washing machine, consider adding a Gore-Tex reproofing product to restore the fabric’s water-repellent finish.

Freeride Ski Jackets, Touring Jackets… The Right Choice with Glisshop, Winter Sports Specialist

If you are into freeride or ski touring, you may already have seen this phenomenon: in very cold conditions, your jacket can develop a white frosty layer on the outside. This simply means your insulating layer is working properly, expelling moisture that instantly freezes on the surface. It’s important to remove this frost layer so your technical jacket continues to breathe effectively.

Every ski jacket comes with two key ratings: waterproofness and breathability. These are crucial in choosing the right model for your needs. For downhill skiing, a mid-range jacket may be sufficient. However, for freeriding or if you’re a keen ski tourer, it’s best to opt for models with high waterproofness and excellent breathability.

Choosing a Jacket for Snowboarding

Waterproofness and breathability are just as important in snowboarding as they are in skiing. Most ski jackets can be used for snowboarding as well. In addition to providing protection, they should be practical, allowing you to ride comfortably with complete freedom of movement. Snowboard jackets, like ski jackets with integrated lining or insulation, are particularly comfortable.

In both snowboarding and skiing, having a coat with multiple pockets is invaluable. More models now feature a ski pass pocket on the sleeve or shoulder, a waterproof chest pocket and internal pockets for your smartphone and goggles. Some even include a built-in microfibre cloth for cleaning sunglasses or ski goggle lenses.

Whether you ski or snowboard, we recommend choosing a jacket with an adjustable hood that fits over a ski helmet. There’s no shortage of options, and we highlight them in each product description to help you make the best choice.
