Marker Kingpin

The range of Marker Kingpin ski bindings is designed for freetouring. These hybrid ski touring bindings combine a pin toe piece with a heel unit engineered to transfer pressure efficiently to the ski. The Kingpin therefore prioritises power transmission and downhill control while still allowing you to reach the summits under your own leg power. Compatible crampons complete the range to maintain grip when skins reach their limits on hard snow or steep slopes.

Kingpin 10, Kingpin 13 or Kingpin MWerks 12: what are the differences?

The Kingpin 10, Kingpin 13 and Kingpin MWerks 12 are both designed for freetouring and share the same hybrid interface, but they cater for different needs. The Kingpin 10 has the lowest DIN range in the line-up, from 5 to 10. The Kingpin 13 extends the adjustment from 6 to 13 for skiers who require a higher release setting. The Kingpin MWerks 12 combines a DIN range of 5 to 12 with a reduced weight of 1,310 grams per pair, thanks to its carbon-reinforced components. It also features heel lifts (7° and 13°) and elastomer pads to absorb impacts on the ascent.

Marker Kingpin ski touring binding or Alpinist?

The Kingpin and Alpinist represent two different approaches to ski touring. The Kingpin is a freetouring binding with a hybrid interface, whereas the Alpinist is a Low Tech pin touring binding. The Kingpin is heavier and places more emphasis on power transmission and ski retention. The Alpinist 10 and 12 without brakes weigh 360 grams per pair and favour lightness on the climb.

The choice therefore depends mainly on which stage of the outing is the priority. The Alpinist is more suited to those looking to minimise weight on long ascents. The Kingpin is a better fit for freetouring, where the climb is primarily a means of accessing your favourite freeride spots, with a heel unit designed to transfer power efficiently to the ski.

When climbing skins no longer offer enough grip on hard snow or on a steep gradient, touring crampons allow you to continue the ascent on skis. The Marker models offered here are compatible with Kingpin, Alpinist and Cruise bindings and come in 80, 90, 105 and 120 mm widths. Their lateral mounting on the toe piece means they can be fitted or removed without taking the ski off. The width should be chosen according to the ski waist, leaving enough clearance on each side for the crampon to fold down without touching the sidewalls.
