Black Crows Freebird: from 80 to 110 mm for different ski touring approaches

The Black Crows Freebird range covers several ways of ski touring. The Mentis Freebird and Ova Freebird, at 80 and 85 mm underfoot, focus on uphill efficiency. The Orb Freebird moves up to 91 mm, the Camox Freebird to 97 mm, then the Navis Freebird and Draco Freebird progressively shift towards a style where the descent and deep snow take on greater importance.

Which Black Crows Freebird should you choose?

Model Waist width Profile Ability level Intended use
Mentis Freebird 80 mm Traditional camber + tip rocker Advanced - Expert Long ascents and a focus on light weight
Ova Freebird 85 mm Traditional camber + tip rocker Intermediate - Advanced Ski touring and uphill efficiency
Orb Freebird 91 mm Traditional camber + tip rocker, directional Advanced - Expert Technical outings and mixed snow
Camox Freebird 97 mm Traditional camber + tip rocker, directional Intermediate - Advanced All-round ski touring and soft snow
Navis Freebird 104 mm Traditional camber + tip rocker, directional Advanced - Expert Downhill-focused ski touring and float
Draco Freebird 110 mm Double rocker, twin-tip Advanced - Expert Deep snow and freetouring

Mentis, Ova and Orb: three width options with the emphasis on the ascent

Mentis Freebird: the lightest

At 80 mm underfoot, the Mentis Freebird is the narrowest in the range. Its tip rocker is paired with a long traditional camber. This geometry, together with its light-weight focus, makes it the most suitable model for outings where elevation gain and efficiency on the climb play a major role.

  • Waist width: 80 mm.

  • Profile: tip rocker and traditional camber.

  • Best for: long climbs and those looking for a narrower ski.

Ova Freebird: touring with an all-mountain feel

The Ova Freebird slightly increases the width to 85 mm underfoot. It retains a tip rocker combined with a traditional camber. Compared with the Mentis, those extra few millimetres give the ski more surface area without pushing it out of the category of relatively narrow touring skis.

  • Waist width: 85 mm.

  • Profile: tip rocker and traditional camber.

  • Best for: touring with a little more downhill performance than the Mentis.

Orb Freebird: light weight and manoeuvrability

The Orb Freebird takes things a step further with 91 mm at the waist. Its directional shape, tip rocker and traditional camber maintain a precise ski touring feel, while its greater width than the Mentis and Ova increases the platform available when the snow becomes softer or more uneven.

  • Waist width: 91 mm.

  • Profile: tip rocker, traditional camber and directional shape.

  • Best for: varied terrain and skiers looking for more presence on the descent without moving up to close to 100 mm.

Camox Freebird: controlled weight and skiability

At 97 mm underfoot, the Camox Freebird sits between the narrowest skis in the range and the Navis and Draco, which are more downhill-oriented. Its directional shape combines a traditional camber with a tip rocker. Its width brings more surface area in soft snow while remaining noticeably less than the two widest Freebirds.

  • Waist width: 97 mm.

  • Profile: tip rocker, traditional camber and directional shape.

  • Ability level: intermediate to advanced.

  • Best for: those wanting a touring ski wider than an Orb without jumping straight to the Navis’ dimensions.

Navis or Draco: when the descent takes centre stage

Navis Freebird: downhill performance

The Navis Freebird reaches 104 mm underfoot. It keeps a directional shape with tip rocker and traditional camber, but its width puts it well above the Camox in terms of surface area. Its longer turn radius also suits a style that leans more towards open turns and the descent.

  • Waist width: 104 mm.

  • Profile: tip rocker, traditional camber and directional shape.

  • Ability level: advanced to expert.

  • Best for: increasing float while keeping a directional feel.

Draco Freebird: powder float

The Draco Freebird stands out more clearly from the rest of the range. Its 110 mm waist, double rocker and twin-tip shape give greater scope for pivoting and float in deep snow. That width also means more ski to move underfoot than on a Mentis, Ova or Orb.

  • Waist width: 110 mm.

  • Profile: double rocker and twin-directional shape.

  • Ability level: advanced to expert.

  • Best for: freetouring and outings where deep snow is the priority.

What are the differences between the Black Crows Freebird skis?

Mentis Freebird or Ova Freebird: which is best for the ascent?

The Mentis Freebird is the narrower of the two at 80 mm underfoot, compared with 85 mm for the Ova Freebird. The Mentis pushes the concept further towards light weight and outings where elevation gain is a major factor. The Ova remains compact in width but adds a little more surface area underfoot, broadening its downhill scope. If uphill efficiency is the priority, the Mentis is the more specialist choice; if you want more versatility in mixed snow, the Ova is less niche.

Ova Freebird or Orb Freebird: what do the extra 6 mm change?

The Ova Freebird measures 85 mm underfoot compared with 91 mm for the Orb Freebird. Both combine traditional camber and tip rocker, but the Orb’s extra width brings more surface area in soft snow. The Ova remains more focused on a style where the climb matters greatly, while the Orb gradually shifts the emphasis towards the descent and more varied terrain.

Orb Freebird or Camox Freebird: 91 or 97 mm underfoot?

The Orb Freebird and Camox Freebird both retain a directional shape with traditional camber and tip rocker. The main difference lies in their width: 91 mm for the Orb and 97 mm for the Camox. The Orb is better suited to anyone wanting to keep a moderate width and a strong touring focus. The Camox offers more surface area in soft snow and is a better option when the descent matters more, without moving up to the Navis’ size.

Camox Freebird or Navis Freebird: which is the better pick if you want to prioritise the descent?

At 97 mm underfoot, the Camox Freebird remains intermediate between the narrower models in the range and the widest Freebirds. The Navis Freebird reaches 104 mm and has a longer turn radius. It therefore increases float and is aimed more at skiers who are happy to accept extra width on the uphill in return for giving more importance to downhill performance. The Camox remains the more balanced option of the two.

Navis Freebird or Draco Freebird: what’s the difference beyond width?

The choice between the Navis Freebird and the Draco Freebird is not just about the 104 and 110 mm underfoot. The Navis keeps a directional shape with tip rocker and traditional camber. The Draco uses a twin-tip shape and a double rocker. The Navis is therefore better suited to a directional style with already substantial width, while the Draco gives more room for pivoting and float in deep snow.
