Which Salomon MTN ski should you choose: 86, 91 or 96 mm?

Waist width increases from 86 to 96 mm. The two 86 mm models keep weight and the surface area that needs to be moved during kick turns to a minimum. The MTN 91 Carbon provides additional support in variable snow, while the MTN 96 Carbon delivers greater float as snow depth increases. However, width alone does not tell the whole story: the MTN 86 Pro and MTN 86 Carbon also feature different constructions.

Model	Waist	Core	Profile	Reinforcements	Positioning
MTN 86 Pro	86 mm	Karuba and poplar	Traditional camber + rocker	Basalt fibres + titanal binding reinforcement	Versatile, easy to use and well-balanced
MTN 86 Carbon	86 mm	Full Karuba	Traditional camber + rocker	Carbon, basalt + titanal binding reinforcement	Lighter construction focused on uphill efficiency and precise handling
MTN 91 Carbon	91 mm	Full Karuba	Traditional camber + tip and tail rocker	Carbon, basalt + titanal binding reinforcement	A balance of climbing efficiency and ease in variable snow
MTN 96 Carbon	96 mm	Full Karuba	Traditional camber + tip and tail rocker	Carbon, basalt + titanal binding reinforcement	The most powder- and descent-oriented option in the selection

MTN 86 Pro or MTN 86 Carbon: the same width, different constructions

The MTN 86 Pro and MTN 86 Carbon share an 86 mm waist, but they are not simply two specification levels of the same ski. The Pro uses a karuba and poplar core with basalt fibres. The Carbon is built around a Full Karuba core combined with carbon and basalt reinforcements.

Salomon MTN 86 Pro: an approachable, well-balanced construction

The Salomon MTN 86 Pro is designed for all-round ski touring. Its 86 mm waist limits the width that needs to be manoeuvred during kick turns while providing more support than a very narrow touring ski when the snow gets deeper.

The karuba and poplar core is reinforced with basalt fibres. A titanal reinforcement strengthens the binding mounting area. Camber underfoot contributes to edge hold on firm snow, while tip rocker makes turn initiation and pivoting easier in more uneven conditions.

Waist: 86 mm
Core: karuba and poplar
Profile: Traditional camber + rocker
Reinforcements: basalt fibres and titanal binding reinforcement
Damping: Cork Damplifier in the tip
Skins: Skin Tail Clip notch in the tail
Ability level: intermediate to advanced

Salomon MTN 86 Carbon: a lightweight Full Karuba construction

The Salomon MTN 86 Carbon retains an 86 mm waist but replaces the Pro's karuba/poplar core with a Full Karuba core combined with carbon and basalt fibres. This construction is designed to keep weight down while maintaining enough stiffness for downhill performance.

Traditional camber provides grip. Tip rocker makes turn initiation and skiing through transformed snow easier. The titanal reinforcement under the binding strengthens this area without forming a full-length metal laminate.

Waist: 86 mm
Core: Full Karuba
Profile: Traditional camber + rocker
Reinforcements: carbon, basalt and titanal binding reinforcement
Damping: Cork Damplifier in the tip
Skins: pre-cut notch in the tail
Ability level: intermediate to advanced

MTN 91 Carbon: the mid-width model for variable snow

With a 91 mm waist, the Salomon MTN 91 Carbon sits between the efficiency of the 86 mm models and the float of the MTN 96 Carbon. This width provides additional surface area in fresh or transformed snow without reaching the dimensions of the widest model.

Its Full Karuba core is combined with carbon and basalt fibres. Camber underfoot maintains grip on firm snow, while tip and tail rocker make pivoting and changing direction easier. The Cork Damplifier insert helps absorb some vibrations.

Waist: 91 mm
Core: Full Karuba
Profile: Traditional camber + rocker
Reinforcements: carbon, basalt and titanal binding reinforcement
Preferred terrain: firm, transformed or shallow fresh snow
Ability level: intermediate to advanced

MTN 96 Carbon: extra width for downhill performance

The Salomon MTN 96 Carbon increases the waist width to 96 mm. Compared with the MTN 86 and 91, this broader platform provides more surface area in fresh snow and shifts the focus towards more descent-oriented touring. It also means moving additional width and weight on climbs and during kick turns.

The Full Karuba core, carbon and basalt fibres, and sandwich construction provide support when the snow becomes uneven. Tip and tail rocker make pivoting easier, while camber underfoot ensures good grip on firm snow.

Waist: 96 mm
Core: Full Karuba
Profile: Traditional camber + rocker
Reinforcements: carbon, basalt and titanal binding reinforcement
Damping: Cork Damplifier in the tip and tail
Preferred terrain: variable and fresh snow
Ability level: intermediate to advanced

Salomon MTN Summit Sport or Pure boots: which should you choose?

Both MTN Summit boots are designed for ski touring, but they differ in flex and closure system. The Summit Sport prioritises simplicity with flex rating of 80 and buckles. The Summit Pure offers greater support with a 90 flex and uses a BOA system combined with the Touring Belt to wrap around the instep.

Model	Flex	Closure	Volume	Positioning
MTN Summit Sport	80	Buckles and strap	Narrow feet	The softer, simpler option
MTN Summit Pure	90	BOA, Touring Belt, buckle and strap	Narrow feet	More supportive with a snug fit

Salomon MTN Summit Sport: 80 flex and buckle closure

The Salomon MTN Summit Sport has a flex of 80, suited to less powerful input than the Summit Pure's 90 flex. Its buckle closure allows targeted adjustment around the foot and cuff.

It is suitable for intermediate ski tourers who prioritise mobility and moderate resistance to forward flex. However, heavier, more powerful skiers or those who ski aggressively on descents may find it less supportive than a stiffer boot.

Salomon MTN Summit Pure: 90 flex and BOA wrap

The Salomon MTN Summit Pure Black Black Race Blue raises the flex to 90. Compared with the Summit Sport's buckles, the BOA applies tension across a broader area. The choice between these two boots therefore depends as much on the required level of support as on the preferred feel: more targeted pressure from buckles or a more even wrap around the lower shell with the BOA.

Salomon MTN Summit 5, 9 or 12 bindings: which adjustment range should you choose?

All three Salomon MTN Summit bindings are designed for touring boots compatible tech inserts. They are distinguished primarily by their adjustment range and brake width.

Model	Adjustment range	Brake	Positioning	Compatible ski crampons
MTN Summit 5 Br Gold H80	2 to 5	80 mm	Low release settings	Dynafit, marked Old
MTN Summit 9 Br Titanal H80	4 to 9	80 mm	Mid-range release settings	Dynafit, marked Old
MTN Summit 12 Br Orange H90	6 to 12	90 mm	High release settings	Dynafit, marked Old
