Overview of Deuter Aircontact Hiking Backpacks

Deuter Aircontact backpacks come in four main families: Aircontact Core, Aircontact X, Aircontact Lite, and Aircontact Ultra. While they are all versatile, they have unique features to cater to specific needs.

Aircontact Core

The go-to model for trekking. It distributes weight effectively, allowing you to cover long distances with ease. It’s also a great travel companion.

Aircontact X

Designed with trekking and travelling in mind, it offers larger adjustable capacities. It includes side pockets for keeping essentials within easy reach.

Aircontact Lite

Perhaps the most versatile of all, this model is distinguished by its lightweight and breathable design, making it ultra-comfortable to carry.

Aircontact Ultra

Known for its modularity, this backpack also boasts trekking qualities. Smaller than the others, it encourages packing only the essentials.

All these Deuter backpacks are available in SL versions, specifically designed for women. For example, models like the Aircontact Lite 35+10 SL, Aircontact Ultra 45+5 SL, or Aircontact X 60+15 SL feature shorter back lengths and narrower straps for optimal comfort.

Comparing the Aircontact Lite 50+10 and 40+10

The Aircontact Lite 50+10 and Aircontact Lite 40+10 are two hiking backpacks that look very similar, making them hard to distinguish. The former weighs 1.64 kg, while the latter is slightly lighter at 1.59 kg—a difference of just 50 g. They are also nearly identical in height, differing by only 3 cm.

Both backpacks feature the VariQuick system, which enables to adjust the back length to ensure optimal lumbar and back comfort. Both are equipped with an X-frame that helps distribute weight more effectively. They also include hip belts with stabilizers to transfer the load to the hips instead of the shoulders. Additionally, load adjustment straps above the shoulder straps bring the backpack closer to the shoulder blades for stability once secured on the back.

So, what sets the Aircontact Lite 50+10 apart from the Aircontact Lite 40+10?

The main difference lies in their storage capacity, which is adjustable. However, distinguishing between the two at first glance can be challenging since one has a capacity of 50+10 litres and the other 40+10 litres.

Both Aircontact Lite backpacks are suitable for long hikes, mountaineering, trekking, and even travel. They are ideal for hikers aiming to minimize the amount of gear they carry, while their additional 10-liter capacity allows for adjustable packing.

Despite differences in storage capacity, these two backpacks demonstrate their versatility, serving equally well for short to medium-distance hikes.

Focus on the Aircontact Ultra 50+5 Backpack

A true multi-tool for modern hikers, the Ultra 50+5 stands out for its lightweight construction. Made from abrasion-resistant ripstop material, it’s built to last for years. It’s comfortable on all types of trails, whether for long hikes or trekking. To ensure every adventure is enjoyable, it features an Aircontact back panel with adjustable length to perfectly fit your body.

Even when fully loaded, it remains comfortable to carry, with the weight resting on your hips rather than your shoulders, thanks to its hip belt. Once properly adjusted to your body, it feels stable, even on steep descents. A reliable companion on the trails, it keeps your gear secure with compression straps accessible from the outside. The removable top lid, which adds 5 litres of capacity, can be detached when not needed, reducing the pack’s weight during fast ascents.

Differences Between Men’s and Women’s Models

Women’s hiking backpacks and men’s backpacks in the Deuter Aircontact range are tailored to suit each gender’s anatomy.

Within each Deuter backpack category, there’s an SL series (Special Lady). These women-specific models typically have slightly smaller capacities, shorter back panels, and narrower S-shaped shoulder straps. The hip stabilizers are conically shaped to better fit the hips. Everything is designed to enhance carrying comfort.

Men’s models, on the other hand, feature slightly larger capacities and longer back panels. However, functionality-wise, Deuter’s men’s and women’s backpacks are similar. They differ mainly in size, back length, volume, strap width and curvature, hip belt shape, and weight.

For example, the Deuter Aircontact 35+10 SL is the women’s version of the Deuter Aircontact 40+10. Both offer adjustable storage capacities: 45 litres maximum for the women’s version and 50 litres maximum for the men’s version.

How to Choose the Right Deuter Aircontact Backpack?

Preferences for backpacks vary between individuals, regardless of gender. Some men may find a women’s model more comfortable, while some women may prefer a standard backpack. This underscores the importance of choosing a backpack based on your intended use, experience level, and the adjustability of the various models rather than strictly adhering to gender-specific categories.
