Julbo

The Julbo brand is over a hundred years old! In 1888, Jules Baud, an optician from the Jura, launched his first spectacles in Morez, the cradle of French eyewear. The contraction of his name gave birth to the brand. In the early 20th century, the optician worked with crystal workers in Chamonix to design high-performance sunglasses to protect eyes in high-mountain environments. These creations marked the start of solar optics, and the production of the iconic Vermont glacier glasses built the brand’s reputation among alpinists. Over time, Julbo became a benchmark for many elite athletes as its product range expanded. Today, Julbo also offers ski goggles such as the Aerospace and Lightyear models, as well as ski helmets. Julbo is now a leader in the outdoor market thanks to its high-performance Reactiv photochromic lenses, NXT lenses, and Reactiv High Mountain screens (formerly Cameleon) which, in addition to being photochromic, are polarising. The other advantage of this screen, which is not 100% polarized, is that you can easily distinguish reflections on sheets of ice. So you can avoid them, eliminating falls and the risk of injury.

1888 - JULES BAUD / THE FIRST CRISTALLIER GLASSES

Completely revolutionary at the time, the "Cristalliers" glasses allowed the Julbo brand to make a name for itself in the world of optics at the beginning of the 20th century. These technical glasses, which had long been sought after by professionals in the Chamonix region, offered a unique protection in the mountains at the time. Their secret: an additional side lens to prevent burns from oblique rays and their reflection on snow and ice. 

1950 - VERMONT / THE FIRST GLACIER GLASSES

Julbo has revolutionized the eyewear world by introducing the Vermont model. With the Vermont sunglasses, it has become possible to reach high altitudes without damaging the eyes. This new kind of glasses called the "Glacier glasses" marked the beginning of the golden age of mountaineering and the conquest of the world's highest peaks. Glacier glasses rapidly found an audience among mountaineers and celebrities of all kinds.e.

1970 - THE JULBO SUNGLASSES TESTED ON THE HIGHEST SUMMITS OF THE WORLD!

In order to offer high quality products capable of coping with the most extreme weather conditions, the company entrusted Yannick Seigneur with the task of testing its new designs on mythical peaks exceeding 8,000 meters. This is how the famous Everest, Makalu and Annapurna glasses were developed. 

1980 - THE PEAK OF ALPINISM  julbo annee 1980


In the 1980s, mountaineering was a booming activity, with some memorable successes and a series of incredible summits conquered. At that time, the company sponsored all these adventures, such as the three summits over 8,000 meters that Eric Escoffier climbed in less than three weeks, or Patrick Gabarrou's famous "Voyage du Gab", which involved climbing seven north faces in the Mont Blanc massif in just three days.

This decade also witnessed the introduction of the first Julbo children's sunglasses and a complete range for babies designed with ergonomic and durable characteristics in mind.  <br></p>

2020 - DEVELOPMENT OF THE REACTIV PHOTOCHROMIC RANGE

A decade of development and experimentation in all sports has led Julbo to once again develop its photochromic range of glasses that adapt instantly to different light conditions, regardless of the weather, for ultra-precise vision. The brand's popular lenses have undergone a complete name change: farewell to Zebra, Camleon and Octopus and hello to Reactiv Performance, Reactiv High Mountain and Reactiv Nautic. These new generation lenses are manufactured by low temperature casting and benefit from a photochromic coating to ensure a lifetime of effectiveness. This type of manufacturing process provides exceptional transparency and stability over time while ensuring the product remains light, impact resistant and solvent resistant. The entire range of Reactiv Photochromic lenses conform to the most advanced technical criteria such as speed of adaptation, amplitude of the photochromic range, lens colour and polarization. The Reactiv range is made up of more than 7 different photochromic lenses in order to accommodate all types of utilisations!
