Its founder, Fernand Petzl, was an artisan but primarily a renowned speleologist. He participated in the explorations of the Dent de Crolles in 1936 and the Gouffre Berger in 1950. He started producing ascenders/descenders in 1968, but it was with his revolutionary headtorch that he truly made a name for himself in the mountaineering market in 1973.

Four years later, he expanded his Petzl product range with harnesses. Released in 1991, the Grigri assisted-braking belay device is among the brand's iconic products. Having acquired Charlet Moser in 2000, the company also offers crampons and ice axes. Since 1990, the company has also developed ranges for professionals working at heights and in rescue. Its personal evacuation system EXO has equipped New York firefighters since 2006. A training and experimentation centre opened at the company's headquarters in Crolles in 2008. Today, the Petzl Group consists of four production sites (three in France and one in Malaysia) and three commercial subsidiaries (in the United States, Spain, and Germany). The current president is none other than Paul Petzl, the founder's son. Chris Sharma, Lynn Hill, Ueli Steck, François Damilano, Mike Horn, and Phil Bence have all trusted Petzl.
