How does the Petzl Grigri work?

The cam-assisted locking mechanism enhances comfort and is forgiving regarding hand position on the brake side. In the event of a fall or during a rest, the cam rotates and clamps the rope. An ergonomic handle allows the rope to be released smoothly and easily. The rope installation diagram is engraved on the Grigri to help prevent misuse. While very simple to use, like all climbing equipment, your safety and that of your partners relies on proper handling. Don’t hesitate to take a course with a qualified professional to learn correct techniques.

Petzl Grigri: easy belaying

Compatible with single dynamic ropes from 8.5 to 11 mm, optimised for diameters between 8.9 and 10.5 mm, and weighing just 175 g, the Grigri makes belaying easier. Comfortable to use and offering a high level of safety, this belay device meets CE EN 15151-1, UKCA and UIAA standards.

How to use a Grigri for climbing?

To use a Grigri for climbing, start by threading the rope through the device according to the diagrams (climber side strand and brake side strand). Then attach the Grigri to the tie-in loop of your harness using a locking carabiner. While belaying, always keep one hand on the brake strand: to give slack, gently tilt the Grigri forward while controlling the rope. To catch a fall, simply pull on the brake strand—the internal mechanism blocks the rope. Finally, to lower the climber, gradually pull the handle while modulating the braking with your hand on the rope.
