Colour

The founder, Fernand Petzl, was a craftsman but above all a renowned caver. He took part in the exploration of the Dent de Crolles in 1936 and the Gouffre Berger in 1950. He began producing ascenders and descenders in 1968, but it was with his revolutionary headlamp that he truly made a name for himself in the mountaineering market in 1973.

Four years later, he expanded the Petzl product range with harnesses. Released in 1991, the self-braking belay device Grigri became one of Petzl’s iconic products. After acquiring Charlet Moser in 2000, the company also began offering crampons and ice axes. Since 1990, Petzl has also developed solutions for professionals working at height and in rescue operations. Its EXO personal evacuation system has been used by New York firefighters since 2006. A training and testing centre opened at the Crolles headquarters in 2008. Today, the Petzl Group comprises four production sites (three in France and one in Malaysia) and three sales subsidiaries (United States, Spain, and Germany). The current president is Paul Petzl, son of the brand’s founder. Chris Sharma, Lynn Hill, Ueli Steck, François Damilano, Mike Horn and Phil Bence – they all trusted Petzl.
