It can be used with a single rope as well as a half rope, and is suitable for belaying from below at the harness or in guide mode from above. The ATC Pilot, on the other hand, is an assisted-braking belay device for single ropes. It makes it much easier to lock the rope almost automatically in the event of a leader fall. Of course, it is essential to always keep your hand on the brake side of the rope below the device, just as you would with a standard manual belay device. These Black Diamond belay devices are fully compatible with HMS carabiners.
