Phantom and Phantom+ therefore rely on the same photochromic principle. The main difference lies in the 50% semi-polarised film added to Phantom+. It cuts distracting glare while retaining useful visual information to help distinguish surface changes between snow and icier areas.

How does a Bollé Phantom photochromic lens work?

A photochromic lens darkens as light becomes more intense and lightens as brightness drops. The goggles can therefore cope with changes in weather or exposure without the need to swap lenses every time. On Phantom, Bollé uses NXT®, a material chosen for its optical clarity, light weight and impact resistance.

Responsiveness is another key part of the technology: Bollé states that the tint of a Phantom lens reaches 70% of its full activation in 20 seconds. The brand combines this photochromic feature with LTS technology, for Low Temperature Sensitivity, to keep activation consistent as winter temperatures vary.

What is the purpose of LTS technology in low temperatures?

The reaction of a photochromic material can be influenced by temperature. Bollé therefore uses LTS technology to reduce this sensitivity in its Phantom lenses. The brand states that they work quickly and consistently over a range between -10 °C and 20 °C. This is particularly relevant for ski goggles, which are exposed both to cold conditions and to rapid changes in sunlight.

What light conditions does a Phantom lens cover?

The photochromic range is not the same for every Phantom lens: the categories covered and the visible light transmission depend on the version chosen. You therefore need to check the lens category and its VLT on the goggles product page.

The principle remains the same: when light levels increase, the lens darkens to filter more light; when they drop, it lightens to let through more visible light. This variation makes it possible to use the same lens across a broader range of conditions than a fixed-tint lens. Phantom lenses also provide 100% UVA and UVB protection.

How do you choose Bollé Phantom ski goggles?

The presence of a Phantom lens alone is not enough to determine which goggles are the best fit. You also need to look at the fit, size, compatibility with a helmet and, for spectacle wearers, whether they are an OTG design. The photochromic range should also match the conditions in which the goggles will mainly be used.

Between Phantom and Phantom+, the choice mainly comes down to glare control. Phantom meets the need for a photochromic lens capable of adapting to changes in brightness. Phantom+ keeps this function and adds 50% semi-polarisation, making it a better option when glare reduction and contrast perception are top priorities.
