Millet: over a century of mountain heritage

From a small Lyon workshop to Himalayan summits, here’s how Millet shaped mountain history:

  • 1921: founded by Marc and Hermance Millet, producing shopping bags and the first framed backpacks near Lyon, later moving to Annecy.
  • 1950: collaboration between René and Raymond Millet with Louis Lachenal and Maurice Herzog for the Annapurna expedition. Millet equips Himalayan expeditions.
  • 1959–1963: Italian guide Walter Bonatti becomes technical advisor and conquers the north faces of the Grandes Jorasses.
  • 1960s–70s: backpack revolution with nylon. Creation of the legendary Sherpa 50.
  • 1977: diversification with the first Gore-Tex parka, down jackets and ski clothing.
  • 1978–1987: historic collaborations with Reinhold Messner (Everest without oxygen), then Christophe Profit and Eric Escoffier (winter trilogy Eiger–Matterhorn–Grandes Jorasses).
  • 1995: acquisition by the Lafuma group (Millet Mountain Group). Millet becomes the official supplier of the Chamonix mountain guides (since 2010).
  • 2000s: partnership with Jean-Christophe Lafaille (Himalaya) and Marco Siffredi (Everest snowboard descent). Launch of the Pierra Ment range for ski mountaineering.
  • 2012–2020: multiple innovation awards (Everest boot, Gore-Tex Active ULZ Zip jacket) and creation of the Trilogy E-one backpack (lightest airbag on the market in 2020).
  • 2021–2022: return to family ownership. Jean-Pierre and Romain Millet take over the Millet Mountain Group.
