Salomon S/LAB freeride skis: QST X or QST Blank?

The choice between the S/LAB QST X and QST Blank is not about skier level: both are demanding freeride skis. The real difference lies in how specialised they are. With a 116 mm waist, the QST X takes powder preference even further. The Blank remains very wide at 112 mm, but its slightly narrower waist and construction make it the more suitable option when conditions are less than perfect.

QST X: priority for big powder days

The QST X is the most obvious choice when deep powder performance is the priority. Its 116 mm waist delivers plenty of float and its double rocker makes it easier to pivot and change direction in deep powder. The traditional camber keeps edge support when the ski encounters firmer snow.

Its construction is based on a Karuba and poplar core reinforced with flax and carbon fibres. The Double Sidewalls strengthen the edges and contribute to its ability to handle pressure. In this range, it is the ski to choose for big lines, skiing fast in powder and maintaining support when snowfall is plentiful.

QST Blank: more at home on various terrains

The QST Blank retains a very generous 112 mm width and a strong powder bias. Compared with the QST X, its appeal becomes clear when the day is not limited to untouched deep snow. It moves more naturally from powder to tracked-out snow or firmer sections.

Its poplar core is reinforced with basalt and glass fibres. The Cork Damplifier reduces vibrations, while the double rocker keeps pivoting easy. Between the two models, QST X for maximum float, QST Blank for a broader playground.

The S/LAB QST Echo touring ski

The S/LAB QST Echo occupies a different place from the QST X and Blank. Its aim is not simply to reduce width: it is the model in the range designed for freetouring. With a 106 mm waist, it keeps enough surface area for deep snow while remaining suitable for skin track approaches.

Its double rocker makes pivoting and lifting the tip easier, while the traditional camber maintains grip on firmer sections. The Karuba and poplar core helps keep weight down, with basalt fibres and recycled ABS sidewalls. For a skier who simply wants to make the most of the lifts before heading off-piste, the QST X and Blank make more sense. For climbing to earn your turns, the QST Echo takes over.

The S/LAB Shift² 10, 13 and 16 touring bindings

The S/LAB Shift² touring bindings use the same hybrid principle: a pin toe piece for moving efficiently uphill, then behaviour close to an alpine binding for skiing. So it is not the intended use that determines the choice between the 10, 13 and 16 versions, but mainly their release range.

The Shift² 10 covers a range from 4 to 10. The Shift² 13 starts at 6 and goes up to 13. The Shift² 16 extends this range from 8 to 16 and features a reinforced construction. The required setting depends on the skier and their equipment: a higher maximum DIN is not, on its own, a sign of a better binding.

The Shift² 10 and 13 are offered with 90, 100, 110 and 120 mm brakes to cover skis of different widths.

A hybrid binding for freetouring

The Shift concept directly addresses the needs of freetouring: keeping the range of motion of a pin toe piece during the ascent, then regaining more support once the skis are pointed downhill. The Shift² generation works particularly on boot retention with Power Block technology. On the Shift² 16, the 3-Part Power Heel also has 16 mm of elastic travel.

The S/LAB Shift Alpha Boa ski boot

With a flex of 140 and a 98 mm last width, the S/LAB Shift Alpha Boa means business. Its stiffness provides plenty of support for skiers capable of flexing it, and its precise fit is particularly suited to narrow feet or skiers who want a close, wraparound hold.

The BOA system allows the fit around the foot to be adjusted, complemented by two aluminium buckles and a 50 mm strap. Walk mode and inserts open it up to freetouring routes. Its appeal lies in keeping a very stiff boot for skiing hard after a skinning approach: a logical match with the Shift² and the wide skis in the S/LAB family.

The S/LAB Skate X-Stiff cross-country ski

The S/LAB Skate X-Stiff represents the racing side of the cross-country selection. Its Innowave honeycomb core keeps the pair at 970 g, while Thin Ply Carbon runs from tip to tail to increase torsional rigidity and transfer power efficiently.

The D2FC system controls the flex and camber during manufacture to produce a consistent pair. The G5 % base receives a versatile SL22 finish to maintain fast glide in a range of snow conditions. Here, the S/LAB philosophy translates into a precise, lightweight ski intended for sporty skating and racing.

The S/LAB Skate Boa cross-country ski boot

The S/LAB Skate Boa follows the same racing logic as the Skate X-Stiff. Its carbon construction and Carbon Loaded cuff provide the lateral stiffness required for skating, while the SensiFit Race wrap holds the foot securely.

The BOA Fit System allows the fit to be fine-tuned and the Custom Fit Race liner can be customised to the shape of the foot. At 900 g a pair and with a Prolink Racing Skate sole, it completes a skating setup focused on precision and power transfer.

What does the Salomon S/LAB range represent?

S/LAB brings together Salomon’s most specialised products, developed around demanding uses. It is therefore not a homogeneous range built around a single discipline: the name appears on freeride and freetouring equipment as well as on gear intended for competitive Nordic skiing.

This logic is clear in the current selection. The QST X pushes specialisation towards powder with its 116 mm waist, while the QST Echo extends that approach into freetouring. The Shift² models answer the need to climb while retaining more support for skiing, and the Shift Alpha Boa applies the same freetouring emphasis to a very stiff boot. In Nordic skiing, the Skate X-Stiff and Skate Boa are firmly positioned on the racing side of skating.

More than a classic performance tier, S/LAB therefore helps identify Salomon products built around a specific purpose. When choosing between them, it is more useful to start with the terrain, discipline and desired behaviour than to treat S/LAB simply as a synonym for ‘top of the range’.
