Back then, snowboards were very stiff with traditional camber and plate bindings. Not comfortable snowboard boots, oh no, but ski boots as stiff as the board. Fortunately, trends have evolved, as have board shapes, camber profiles, and materials. The discipline has progressed a lot, as have the styles of riders (thankfully, some might say).
This is where freestyle came into play and the birth of the Winter X Games, an extreme sports competition including snowboarding events such as superpipe, big air, and boardercross. It also marked the arrival of snowboarding at the Olympic Games in 1998 in Nagano with two events: giant slalom and half-pipe. Note that the Olympics now include five snowboarding events, including slopestyle.
Then came the freeride wave with the spotlight on the Freeride World Tour (FWT), the world freeride championship. Steep chutes, cornice jumps, even cliff drops and challenging runs are on the agenda, all them off-piste. This also marked the arrival of splitboards on the market.
