Which flex should you choose in the Nordica Speedmachine range?

On adult Speedmachine models, as flex increases so do the demands. However, the number alone is not enough to choose a boot: build, technique and skiing style also influence the stiffness that will genuinely suit you.

The Speedmachine 3 100 is the least rigid version in this men's selection. Flex 110 increases support, while the 120s and especially the 130s demand more commitment to take full advantage of their stiffness. At the same flex, a BOA version should therefore not be seen as automatically more high-performance than a buckle version: the difference is first and foremost in how the boot wraps around and secures the foot.

What are the differences between buckle, BOA and Dual Dial BOA Speedmachine boots?

The traditional Speedmachine 3 retain four micrometric buckles. This design allows separate adjustment of several closure points. The Speedmachine 3 BOA replace the two lower-shell buckles with the BOA Fit System: the dial acts on foot wrap with progressive, micro-adjustable tightening, while the cuff still uses two buckles.

The BOA DD versions, for Dual Dial, go a step further with two independent dials. They let you set the lower shell and cuff differently. The Speedmachine 3 120 BOA DD and Speedmachine 3 130 BOA DD therefore stand apart from their single-BOA equivalents even before considering their flex.

The Speedmachine 3 130 S BOA Cuff adopts a different architecture: its BOA is fitted to the cuff, while two micrometric buckles remain on the lower shell. It should therefore not be mistaken with the 130 BOA DD.

The Speedmachine 3 85 W favours a more forgiving flex than the 95 W and 105 W. The 95 W increases support, while the 105 W is the stiffest option in the women’s range. At each of these flex levels, the choice between buckles and BOA mainly concerns how the boot is adjusted and tightened.

On some women’s versions, Nordica also adds an Adjustable Cuff Profile to adapt cuff volume around the calf. The liner varies depending on the model: the more approachable versions use a 3D Performance Fit or Precision Fit, while several stiffer models use a 3D Cork Fit with a cork zone around the heel.

Medium 100 mm adult last

Adult Speedmachine boots feature a 100 mm last, corresponding to a Medium volume. This measurement helps place the boot in the correct last category, but it does not mean a Speedmachine will suit every foot. Instep volume, heel hold, calf shape and foot size remain decisive.

The Infrared technology found on many Speedmachine models allows a bootfitter to work locally on the shell to relieve some pressure points.

3Force construction

The 3Force construction is one of the defining features of Speedmachine boots. Nordica uses several plastic densities and a structure designed to combine support and power transmission while retaining softer zones where they make fitting easier. On some recent versions, this concept takes the form of a 3Force Honeycomb construction adapted to the BOA system.

Speedmachine J1, J2, J3 or J4: a progression designed for children

The Nordica Speedmachine Junior are not simply scaled-down adult Speedmachines. Their construction, Junior volume and closure system are tailored to young skiers. The progression from J1 to J4 mainly increases support and the number of closure points.

The jump from the J2 to the J3 is not based on an increase in flex. The J3 mainly adds a third buckle. The J4 then moves up to 55 and uses four buckles. The J2 and J3 also feature the Weight Adjuster, which makes it possible to alter support according to the young skier’s weight.

GripWalk soles

The adult Speedmachine 3 models come with GripWalk soles. Their walking-friendly profile makes walking easier than with a flat alpine sole, but binding compatibility must always be checked: a GripWalk boot must be used with bindings explicitly compatible with this standard.

How do you choose your Nordica Speedmachine?

The choice starts with the last: the adult Speedmachine is primarily aimed at an intermediate-volume foot. Once the fit is validated, flex lets you tailor the level of support to the skier. The final criterion is the closure system: four buckles for a traditional point-by-point adjustment, BOA for progressive lower-shell tightening, Dual Dial BOA for adjusting two zones independently, or BOA Cuff on the Speedmachine 3 130 S.
