Burton bindings
Burton offers several ranges of bindings, with different levels of support, response and entry systems to suit every snowboarder’s preferences. The brand therefore offers far more than just snowboards: its binding range extends from conventional strap-in models to Step On bindings, with Re:Flex or EST versions depending on the required mounting system. Your choice will primarily depend on compatibility with the board, the entry system and the desired level of stiffness.

Step On or conventional Burton strap-in bindings?
Burton strap bindings retain a traditional design: the boot is secured by an ankle strap and toe strap. Burton uses this system across models offering varying levels of flexibility and response, from accessible bindings through to versions designed for more aggressive riding.
The Burton Step On system works differently, eliminating the straps altogether. The boot connects directly to the binding at three points: two at the forefoot and one at the heel. This makes stepping in quicker, but Step On-compatible boots are essential.
How do Burton Step On bindings work?
Burton Step On bindings create a direct connection between the boot and binding. The heel engages with its connection point first, before the forefoot locks into the two side attachment points. There is therefore no need to tighten straps before every lap.
The system is not limited to one riding level. Burton offers it in several flex ratings, from more versatile Step On bindings through to stiffer models such as the Step On X or Cartel X Step On. Your decision should therefore be based as much on the desired flex and responsiveness as on whether you want a strapless entry system.
Re:Flex or EST: which Burton bindings should you choose?
Burton primarily uses two mounting systems for its snowboard bindings. Re:Flex versions use a mounting disc and are designed to work with the main insert patterns currently available. They are therefore the easiest option if you want compatibility with snowboards from different brands.
By contrast, EST bindings are designed specifically for boards featuring Burton’s The Channel system. They mount directly into the board’s channel, allowing extensive adjustment of the binding position. A Burton Cartel X EST or Step On Lexa X EST is therefore not intended for a conventional board with 2x4 inserts.
Burton Cartel, Cartel X and Cartel X Step On
The Cartel family is one of Burton’s long-standing benchmarks for snowboarders looking for a versatile binding that remains responsive enough for dynamic riding. The Cartel X offers greater stiffness and precision, with enhanced support for powerful edge engagement and riders seeking a more responsive feel.
The Cartel X Step On delivers the same responsive performance while incorporating the Step On connection system. It therefore retains a firm, precise feel while dispensing with straps. Burton designed it for use across terrain parks, groomers and fresh snow.
Lexa, Scribe and Step On: which Burton women’s bindings should you choose?
Burton’s range includes several women’s snowboard bindings. The Scribe is a more accessible option, while the Lexa and Lexa X provide increased response for female riders seeking greater support and precision.
The Step On system is also available within this part of the range, notably with the Step On Women and Step On Lexa X.
Burton bindings designed for children
Burton also offers children’s snowboard bindings. Models such as the Mini Grom, Grom and Kids' Smalls Re:Flex feature a more forgiving flex and are easier for young snowboarders to use. The Step On system is also available in a junior version with the Kid's Step On, which must be paired with compatible Step On boots.
Which Burton bindings should you choose for your riding style?
For all-mountain riding and compatibility with different boards, Re:Flex bindings are generally the most straightforward choice. Riders using a Burton snowboard equipped with The Channel can also opt for an EST version to benefit from the system’s dedicated adjustment options.
The stiffness should then match the performance you are looking for. A softer binding provides greater freedom of movement and is well suited to progressing or adopting a more playful riding style. A stiffer binding transfers input more directly and will appeal to snowboarders seeking precision when carving, riding at speed or tackling more demanding terrain. Finally, the choice between straps and Step On mainly comes down to your preferred entry system, provided that the bindings and boots are compatible.
