What is the ideal weight for a 30-litre hiking backpack?
30L backpacks typically weigh between 650 g and 1.5 kg. Their design is what determines the weight, so it’s rare for two backpacks with the same capacity to weigh exactly the same. Brands such as Vaude, Osprey, Lafuma, Patagonia, Lowe Alpine, Ferrino, Mammut, Blue Ice, Dynafit, Ortovox, Salewa, RAB, Deuter and Cilao are among those that produce the lightest models. They all take great care in designing their packs to achieve the best balance between weight, durability and functionality, with the aim of making them as practical and ergonomic as possible while keeping the weight to a minimum.
What backpack capacity for a week-long trip? Is 30 litres big enough?
If you’re looking for a backpack for a week of hiking or backpacking, we recommend choosing one with a capacity of 50 to 70 litres. It will allow you to carry all your gear: tent, sleeping bag, liner, trekking mat, clothing, camping stove, cooking pot, water, food, and more. However, a 30-litre backpack can be enough for a week if you’re hiking light, have regular access to supplies, and plan to stay in hostels or mountain refuges.
What size backpack is allowed as carry-on luggage on a plane?
If you're flying and want to use a backpack as your carry-on bag, a 30-litre pack is a very sensible choice. In fact, some models come with compartments specifically designed to carry a laptop, which will remain easily accessible during the flight. The Millet Ubic and Deuter Freerider are both good options. Naturally, it’s always best to check in advance that the dimensions comply with airline regulations.
Key features of a good 30-litre hiking day pack
- Comfort: opt for backpacks with a carrying system that includes breathable, adjustable back panels, padded shoulder straps and a comfortable hip belt.
- Waterproofing: some backpacks are made from waterproof materials. Others come with a rain cover, which is essential for keeping your gear dry in wet weather.
- Organisation: most 30-litre backpacks are designed with various compartments and multiple pockets, making it easier to store and organise your belongings, including smaller gear.
Focus on models from leading brands
Osprey’s star performer: the Talon 33
Renowned for their quality design and comfort, Osprey backpacks are ideal for hikers who want to rely on their gear. The Talon 33 model is excellent—but of course, it’s not the only standout in Osprey’s range.
Millet and its iconic Ubic 30
Millet offers versatile backpacks that are just as suitable for hiking as they are for travelling. Durable and cleverly designed, we can’t recommend them highly enough. The Ubic 30 model is a must-have.
How good is Millet’s D-Tour?
Originally developed for ski touring on one- or two-day outings, the Millet D-Tour 30L backpack can also be used for hiking once the snow has melted. It’s very comfortable to carry and lets you bring everything you need, including a hydration bladder and a flask that can be kept within easy reach on the right shoulder strap.
Hiking with the Access 30 by Lafuma
Perfect for anyone who enjoys recharging in nature, Lafuma backpacks combine simplicity with functionality. We recommend the Access 30 model, as well as the women’s version, the Access 30 W.
Deuter and its iconic Futura 30
Deuter backpacks are known for being convenient, comfortable, and durable. Among the brand’s most iconic models is the Futura 30, which features a mesh back panel that allows air to circulate—ideal for long days of walking. It’s also available in an SL version, with shoulder straps shaped to fit the female anatomy.
The Trailblazer by Salomon
Salomon is known for its compact, breathable backpacks that appeal to both casual and frequent walkers. The brand also designs models suited to trail running. The Trailblazer is a perfect example—one of their 30L packs that’s just as practical for running as it is for hiking.
