Introduction to Salomon S/Max alpine skis

In alpine skiing, the Salomon S/Max range is geared towards piste skiing and carving, with several levels of performance and constructions that vary from one model to the next. The S/Max 6, S/Max 8, S/Max 10 and S/Max 12 therefore do not share exactly the same build: Salomon changes the core, reinforcements and construction to alter edge grip and behaviour on groomed snow.

This collection forms part of the wider family of Salomon skis. Several XT versions are also available to complement the main models.

What is the difference between the Salomon S/Max 6, S/Max 8, S/Max 10 and S/Max 12?

The numbers 6, 8, 10 and 12 are used to distinguish different performance levels within the S/Max family. However, the difference is not limited to skier ability: the construction and reinforcements also evolve from one model to another.

Salomon S/Max 6

Primarily aimed at beginner to intermediate skiers, the S/Max 6 is a very accessible model, ideal for getting started and progressing smoothly. With its lively wood core and sandwich construction, this ski offers good torsional stiffness while remaining light and easy to handle. It is designed for easy handling, providing good edge hold on hard snow and making turns on softer snow easier thanks to its tip rocker. Perfect for those first runs!

Salomon S/Max 8

The S/Max 8 is an entry point into the range’s sporty carving performance. Its Dual Core 2 construction combines, among other things, an ash insert and tri-axial HT fibre, with semi-sandwich sidewalls. The Edge Amplifier SL helps transfer input to the edges. It remains suited to intermediate skiers who want to improve their technique on piste without moving straight to the most reinforced model in the range.

Salomon S/Max 10 and S/Max XT

The S/Max 10 and S/Max 10 XT occupy the sporty middle ground of the range, for advanced skiers looking for responsiveness and precise piste performance. The S/Max 10 retains a clearly carving-led orientation, with a construction designed to promote edge hold and accurate power transmission. The S/Max 10 XT shares this sporty positioning but with a shape that allows for a greater variety of turn shapes. The choice between the two therefore mainly depends on the type of skiing you want: the S/Max 10 if you want to prioritise carving, the S/Max 10 XT if you want to vary turn radii and shapes more easily.

Salomon S/Max 12

The S/Max 12 is the most demanding option in the range. This version combines a wood core with a double layer of titanal and a Full Sandwich construction. This layout enhances power transfer and stability as the pace increases. The S/Max 12 is therefore more suited to advanced skiers who already have solid technique.

The Salomon S/Max N° women's range

The women’s version of the family is identified by the S/Max N° naming. The S/Max N°6, N°8, N°10 and N°12 also allow the level of piste ²performance to progress. This progression should not be reduced to a simple question of stiffness: constructions and reinforcements vary according to the model.

The S/Max N°8, for example, uses a Dual Core 2 construction with ash core, tri-axial HT fibre, a single layer of titanal and Edge Amplifier SL. The S/Max N°10 sits above it in the range, while the S/Max N°12 is aimed at a sportier style of skiing. Some XT versions also complete this family.

Salomon S/Max cross-country skis

The name S/Max is also used by Salomon in Nordic skiing. Here it refers to sporty models positioned below the S/Race race range and developed for the two main techniques: skating and classic.

Salomon S/Max eSkin: classic with skins

The S/Max eSkin is a classic cross-country ski using skins to provide grip during the kick phase. The S/Max eSkin Med combines, among other things, an S-Core 45 core, a G5 Universal base and a 100% mohair skin. This design removes the need for a wax pocket and is aimed at intermediate to advanced classic skiers looking for a sporty classic ski.

The range also includes an S/Max eSkin Junior, designed for young sporting cross-country skiers. It is a proper junior model and not simply a smaller version of the adult S/Max eSkin.

Salomon S/Max Skate

The S/Max Skate carries the family’s performance focus over to skating. It uses an S-Core 45 core and a G5 Universal base. Its construction and positioning make it suitable for skiers who want to develop their technique and efficiency in skate skiing without necessarily moving up to the more competition-oriented S/Race or S/Lab models.

Boots and poles complete the S/Max family in Nordic skiing

The range is not limited to skis. The Salomon cross-country ski boots include the S/Max Skate MV, designed for skating. It is built to provide the lateral support needed for skate technique and features Thinsulate insulation.

The S/Max Carbon Click extend this world with one-piece cross-country ski poles featuring a 100% carbon 16/9 shaft. Salomon equips them with the Ergoclick system and an S/Lab Fit Click strap, which allows the strap to be detached quickly from the grip.

How do you choose within the Salomon S/Max range?

The first criterion is the discipline. In alpine skiing, S/Max are piste skis designed for carving, with increasing demands between the main 6, 8, 10 and 12 models and an S/Max N° line dedicated to women. In cross-country skiing, the choice is first between S/Max Skate for skating and S/Max eSkin for classic skin skiing. The S/Max Skate MV boots and S/Max Carbon Click poles extend this sporty direction into Nordic equipment.
