Product description — Discovery 86 Pro

When your day takes you from the piste to soft snow and off-piste terrain, the Discovery 86 Pro from Head is an all-mountain ski designed for varied terrain, offering a stable and fluid ride.

What is the Head Discovery 86 Pro designed for?

With an 86 mm waist width, this ski offers more support in light powder, spring snow, and slushy conditions than the more piste-oriented Discovery models. The tip rocker makes it easier to initiate turns and helps the ski remain maneuverable when the terrain becomes less even. The classic camber maintains grip on hard snow and allows you to return to the piste efficiently. The Superframe construction, featuring a wood core, Auxetic, and graphene, delivers a progressive flex that stiffens under pressure to enhance stability.

Who is the Head Discovery 86 Pro ski designed for?

This ski is designed for intermediate to advanced skiers who are already technically comfortable and want an all-mountain ski capable of covering a large part of the ski area, with a preference for varied skiing between groomed runs, off-piste areas, and light powder.

What are the main qualities of the Head Discovery 86 Pro ski?

Smooth

Stable

Versatile

Is the Discovery 86 Pro stable in uneven snow?

Yes. The wood core, graphene, and progressive flex provided by Auxetic help the ski stay planted in changing snow conditions.

Does the Discovery 86 Pro maintain grip on hard snow?

Yes. The classic camber maintains edge-to-snow contact and ensures precise control on groomed runs.

Is the Discovery 86 Pro suitable for a variety of turns?

Yes. Its versatile turning radius allows you to alternate between medium-radius turns and shorter turns depending on the terrain and the intensity of your pressure.

What sets the Discovery 86 Pro apart from the Discovery 78 Sport?

The Discovery 86 Pro is designed for a more aggressive and varied riding style, with a wood core and better performance in soft snow, while the Discovery 78 Sport remains more accessible and focused on skill development.

Tips and advice

How to choose the length of your skis?

After using our calculator, you can explore further with our guides (depending on your skiing style):

And to see the method in action, here’s our video tutorial (example focused on piste / all-mountain skiing, with useful benchmarks whatever your style).

How to choose the size of your piste and all-mountain skis?

At glisshop.co.uk, you’ll find one of the most comprehensive ski selections available online. To choose the right pair, start with three simple criteria: your ability level, your preferred terrain (piste, all-mountain, freeride, freestyle, touring), and your budget.

To refine your selection, several options are available:

  1. The advanced search tool: located at the top of each category page, it allows you to filter by brand, skill level, discipline, and more. By combining these filters, you can quickly narrow down the range and easily find the models best suited to your skiing style.

  2. Contact us on 020 3129 3301: a pair of skis is a technical piece of equipment. Before placing your order, it’s best to make sure the model truly meets your expectations. Our team is here to advise you.

To go further and understand the differences between ski types, take a look at our comprehensive guide 'Which skis to choose?'.

During the process or your order, we'll ask you to complete a form about the mounting of your bindings. With these details, we will be able to mount the bindings with the correct settings. The release value of the bindings is set by a professional skiman, and according to the norm AFNOR FD S 52-748.

If you don't have your own ski boots when you order, the bindings will be pre-mounted. The final settings can be done :

- by a shop if you are renting your ski boots

- by our skiman : you can call us for any technical questions. Our skiman will do the final settings for you. Telephone : 020 3129 3301

All skis you purchase on our website are factory-waxed and tuned. This means they are ready to hit the slopes. However, gear tends to wear and in order to keep it in its best shape, you need to maintain base and edges on a regular basis.

Maintaining your skis is essential for a smooth glide and a solit grip. Frequency of maintenance may vary depending on how often you use your skis, or on how damaged they are. We recommend you to wax them every 10 riding days and at the end of the season. Edges need to be tuned up to 2 times per season if you want to keep a good edge control. However, don't overdo it. Tuning is basically scraping off material. If you do it too often, the edges will vanish after some time.

When your base is damaged and shows shallow scratches or rock gouge, it is possible to repair it.

You can get these repairs done by professional ski shop, or if the gouge is only superficial you may repair it yourself. To do so, you will need special tools and materials such as wax, Ptex for repairing bases, edge sharpeners, etc. You can find them on our website.

All products benefit from a manufacturer guarantee, as long as the damage is caused by a manufacturing defect (may it be hidden or obvious).

Usually, the manufacturer guarantee lasts two years.

Only the manufacturer is able to decide if there has been a 'manufacturing defect' or a 'misuse'. Glisshop is only an intermediary between you and the manufacturer.

The manufacturer's guarantee will not apply if the problem comes from a misuse.

Setting the release value of your bindings is a major safety issue.

In order to fully function and ensure safety, your bindings need to be set according to the Afnor FD S 52-748 standard. We wrote down a guide to help you find out the release value matching your needs.

When buying a pair of skis, you will have to complete a form asking for your measurements. Please complete it with the most accurate information: it will allow our technicians to adjust precisely your bindings and lower down the risk of injury.
