Splitboard
Splitboarding – a rebirth of snowboarding?
Once dismissed by skiers and later adored in the 2000s, the snowboard revolutionised snow sports but always had one major limitation: its inability to move efficiently on flat terrain or uphill. That was until snowboarders, inspired by ski touring, came up with the splitboard – now a staple in specialist snowboard shops. Riders seeking adventure will find at Glisshop all the gear they need to enjoy backcountry snowboarding!

Mountain safety
Before every splitboard or freeride outing, mountain safety must remain your top priority. Always take the time to check the avalanche bulletin to understand the conditions and risk areas. In case of an accident, knowing how to carry out an avalanche victim search is crucial – good preparation and rescue skills can make all the difference.
Don’t forget to complete your gear with the essential mountain safety accessories for peace of mind (transceiver, shovel, probe). For enhanced protection, opt for an airbag backpack, designed to keep you on the surface in case of an avalanche. Being well-trained, well-equipped and aware of the risks is the key to enjoying the mountains safely.

The French brand Plum stands out for its lightweight, responsive bindings. Meanwhile, Nitro delivers splitboards that blend agility and performance for exploring the entire mountain.
The splitboard – the perfect tool for exploring the mountains?
While skiers have long been able to reach untouched mountain slopes, the brave snowboarder was once confined to ski resorts or forced to carry their board. Then came the splitboard – a clever invention allowing snowboarders to embark on their own touring adventures. By splitting the snowboard into two parts (or even three or four, depending on the model) and reassembling it into a solid board, riders can now climb and descend on the same trusty board.
Just as history remembers the Montgolfier brothers for inventing the hot-air balloon and the DeLorean for time travel, a quick online search reveals that the origins of the splitboard are far less clear-cut.
Like the snowboard itself, the invention of the splitboard is a matter of debate. Legend has it that in the 1980s, some Germans were already cutting their boards in half, but the true beginnings of the splitboard seem to date back to 1991 with a certain Brett ‘Kowboy’ Kobernik. Recovering from a snowboarding injury, Kobernik had time on his hands. Following a friend’s suggestion, he began cutting a snowboard in his garage and reassembling it with various fastening systems and rubber strips. Once recovered, the trained avalanche forecaster started touring the Utah mountains with his prototype.
Three years later, in 1994, he met Mark Wariakos, owner of a small ski touring and telemark equipment brand called Voile. Together, they developed and marketed the Voile Split DIY kit, allowing any snowboarder with a bit of skill and a workshop to roll up their sleeves and convert their board into a splitboard. But rolling up the sleeves of a flannel shirt isn’t always easy, and the snowboarding world wasn’t quite ready yet. Lurking in the shadows, the splitboard waited for its moment while brands like Spark R & D and Karakoram worked on increasingly efficient splitboard bindings.
The breakthrough came about fifteen years later, thanks to big names like Jeremy Jones and Xavier De Le Rue, who showcased freeride sections reached not by helicopter but by splitboard in their films. Everyday snowboarders realised that splitboarding could open up new horizons, and the discipline finally took off. Today, countless brands offer splitboards, and the equipment keeps improving. From boards and bindings to specialised skins and crampons, Glisshop stays on the lookout for the latest innovations to bring you the best splitboard gear available.
