Atomic Hawx

The choice of a Hawx ski boot from Atomic starts with foot shape. The Hawx Ultra uses a narrow 98 mm fit, the Hawx Prime an intermediate 100 mm volume, and the Hawx Magna a wide 102 mm volume. Within each of these families, the flex then determines the level of support, while the buckle, BOA or Dual BOA versions offer different ways of handling closure. The Hawx XTDs form a category of their own: their walk mode makes them ideal for freeride touring, unlike the alpine Hawx boots designed primarily for resort skiing.

Hawx Ultra, Prime or Magna: choose according to foot width

The 98, 100 and 102 mm figures are reference widths, generally set around a 26/26.5 shell. They do not correspond directly to the foot width measured on the ground and change with shell size. They are mainly used to position the three Hawx volumes relative to one another.

Family Last width Foot shape Flexes in the range Versions available
Hawx Ultra 98 mm Narrow feet or medium feet looking for a close, precise fit 85 to 130 BOA, Dual BOA and Ultra XTD
Hawx Prime 100 mm Average-width feet 85 to 130 Buckles, BOA and Dual BOA
Hawx Magna 102 mm Wide feet or high-volume insteps 75 to 130 Buckles, BOA, Dual BOA and Magna XTD

A wider last does not mean an easier boot. The Hawx Magna 130 S, for example, still has a 102 mm fit, but its 130 flex is aimed at experienced skiers. By contrast, the Hawx Ultra 85 Boa W remains relatively approachable despite its precise 98 mm fit. The last describes the space available around the foot; the flex describes the boot’s resistance to deformation.

Atomic Hawx Magna: models for wide feet

The Hawx Magna boots retain a 102 mm last throughout the range, but their intended use changes markedly with the flex. The Magna 75 W, 85 W and 90 prioritise ease of use. The Magna 100 and 110 provide greater support for sportier skiing. The 120 S and 130 S versions are aimed at more powerful skiers, without reducing the internal volume.

Model Flex Gender Level Closure Positioning
Hawx Magna 75 W 75 Women Beginner - Intermediate 4 buckles The most approachable in the family, with a calf-friendly cuff and Select Bronze liner
Hawx Magna 85 W 85 Women Intermediate - Advanced 4 buckles More support than the 75 W, with Select Silver liner
Hawx Magna 90 90 Men Beginner - Intermediate 4 buckles Friendly recreational model, fitted with a Select Bronze liner
Hawx Magna 95 Boa W 95 Women Advanced - Expert BOA on the shell Wide fit, lively flex and Mimic Silver liner
Hawx Magna 100 100 Men Intermediate - Advanced 4 buckles Core model with traditional closure and Select Silver liner
Hawx Magna 100 Boa 100 Men Intermediate - Advanced BOA on the shell Same flex as the Magna 100, with BOA lower-shell closure
Hawx Magna 110 Black Ocean 110 Men Intermediate - Advanced 4 buckles Enhanced support and Mimic Silver liner
Hawx Magna 110 S Boa GW 110 Men Intermediate - Advanced BOA on the shell Customisable S version, with heat-mouldable Gold liner
Hawx Magna 120 S Dual Boa 120 Men Advanced - Expert Dual BOA Independent double adjustment, Power Shift 2.0 and Mimic Platinum liner
Hawx Magna 130 S 130 Men Advanced - Expert 4 buckles The stiffest of the alpine Magna boots, with Power Shift 2.0 and Mimic Platinum liner

Magna 100 or Magna 100 Boa?

The two models share a 100 flex and a 102 mm volume. The Hawx Magna 100 uses four buckles, allowing the forefoot and instep to be adjusted separately. The Hawx Magna 100 Boa replaces the lower-shell buckles with a BOA system to wrap this area with a single adjustment. The choice therefore mainly concerns the type of closure, not stiffness.

Magna 120 S Dual Boa or Magna 130 S?

The Hawx Magna 120 S Dual Boa combines a 120 flex with two BOA dials, adjusting the shell and cuff separately. The Hawx Magna 130 S is stiffer and keeps four buckles. The 120 S makes frequent adjustments easier; the 130 S favours a firmer flex and a traditional closure.

Atomic Hawx Prime: intermediate volume

With their 100 mm volume, the Hawx Prime sit at the centre of the range. The selection includes four-buckle models, BOA versions on the shell and two Dual BOA models. The Prime 85 W/85 Boa W, Prime 100/100 Boa and Prime 110/110 Boa pairs make it possible to choose the closure without changing flex.

Model Flex Gender Ability level Closure Positioning
Hawx Prime 85 W 85 Women Intermediate - Advanced 4 buckles Friendly flex, Low Cuff and Mimic Silver liner
Hawx Prime 85 Boa W 85 Women Intermediate - Advanced BOA on the shell BOA alternative to the Prime 85 W, with the same flex rating
Hawx Prime 95 Boa W 95 Women Advanced - Expert BOA on the shell More responsive than the Prime 85 W for a dynamic style of skiing
Hawx Prime 100 100 Men Intermediate - Advanced 4 buckles Intermediate model with traditional adjustment and Silver liner
Hawx Prime 100 Boa 100 Men Intermediate - Advanced BOA on the shell Same flex as the Prime 100, with BOA wrap over the instep
Hawx Prime 105 Dual Boa W 105 Women Advanced - Expert Dual BOA Sporty flex and two independent adjustment zones
Hawx Prime 110 110 Men Intermediate - Advanced 4 buckles Strong support with zone-by-zone manual adjustment
Hawx Prime 110 Boa 110 Men Intermediate - Advanced BOA on the shell BOA alternative to the buckled Prime 110
Hawx Prime 120 S Boa 120 Men Advanced - Expert BOA on the shell Power Shift and Mimic Platinum liner for sporty skiing
Hawx Prime 120 S Dual Boa GW 120 Men Advanced - Expert Dual BOA Dual BOA adjustment and 120 flex Power Shift
Hawx Prime 130 S Boa 130 Men Advanced - Expert BOA on the shell The stiffest Prime in the range, with Platinum liner

Prime with buckles or Prime Boa?

With the same flex rating, the difference is not the recommended ability level. The four-buckle models allow you to adjust tension separately across several zones. BOA versions use a dial to act on the lower shell at the same time and distribute pressure around the instep. BOA makes quick adjustments easier and wraps the foot more closely; buckles retain a more segmented fit.

What does Dual Boa change?

On the Hawx Prime 105 Dual Boa W and Prime 120 S Dual Boa, a second dial adjusts the cuff. This alternative to buckles gives a different feel, with your foot and lower leg wrapped by the boot.

Atomic Hawx Ultra: a 98 mm last for slim feet

The Hawx Ultra reduce the volume to 98 mm. They are aimed primarily at narrow feet and skiers looking for a more precise, snug fit. This fit difference should not be confused with a level hierarchy: the range runs from the Hawx Ultra 85 Boa W to several 130 flex models.

Model Flex Gender Ability level Closure Positioning
Hawx Ultra 85 Boa W 85 Women Intermediate - Advanced BOA on the shell The most approachable of the Ultra models selected
Hawx Ultra 95 Boa W 95 Women Advanced - Expert BOA on the shell More responsive flex, Silver liner and claimed 3M Thinsulate insulation
Hawx Ultra 100 Boa 100 Men Intermediate - Advanced BOA on the shell Intermediate flex and narrow fit
Hawx Ultra 100 Dual Boa 100 Men Intermediate - Advanced Dual BOA Same flex rating with independent BOA adjustment for cuff and shell
Hawx Ultra 110 S Boa 110 Men Advanced - Expert BOA on the shell Enhanced support for technical or powerful skiers
Hawx Ultra 130 S Boa 130 Men Advanced - Expert BOA on the shell Very stiff flex and narrow fit for committed skiing
Hawx Ultra 130 S Dual Boa 130 Men Advanced - Expert Dual BOA High-end narrow model with dual BOA adjustment

Ultra 100 Boa or Ultra 100 Dual Boa?

Both models retain a flex rating of 100 and a 98 mm last. On the Hawx Ultra 100 Boa, the BOA dial wraps the instep, while two buckles adjust the cuff tightness around the shin. The Hawx Ultra 100 Dual Boa replaces those buckles with a second BOA dial, which spreads the tension more across the upper part of the boot. The choice therefore mostly depends on the feel you want: more localised hold with buckles, or a more even wrap around the cuff with Dual Boa.

Ultra 130 S Boa or Ultra 130 S Dual Boa?

Both models combine a flex rating of 130 with a narrow 98 mm last and allow the lower and upper parts of the boot to be adjusted separately. On the Hawx Ultra 130 S Boa, the BOA dial wraps the instep, while two buckles adjust the cuff hold around the shin. The Hawx Ultra 130 S Dual Boa replaces those buckles with a second BOA dial: cuff tightening is then more progressive and spread over a larger area. The choice therefore depends on the feel you are after: more localised, direct hold with buckles, or a more even wrap with Dual Boa.

Buckles, Boa or Dual Boa: three different feels

Closure Principle Wrap type Desired feel
4 buckles Each buckle adjusts a separate area of the shell or cuff More targeted hold, with pressure fine-tuned point by point Suited to skiers who want precise control over each zone
Boa on the shell A dial adjusts the lower part of the boot, while two buckles close the cuff Even wrap over the instep, combined with more targeted hold around the shin Combines the Boa's even pressure distribution over the foot with the direct feel of buckles on the cuff
Dual Boa One dial adjusts the shell and a second controls the cuff More continuous, evenly distributed wrap from foot to shin Designed for skiers who prefer a consistent tension that is quick to adjust across the whole boot

The three systems all allow the lower and upper parts of the boot to be adjusted separately. Their main difference lies in how the pressure is applied: buckles act more locally, whereas the Boa spreads tension over a wider area. However, no system can make up for an unsuitable boot volume, shell size or flex.

Which flex should you choose in Atomic Hawx boots?

Flex makes it possible to compare stiffness levels within the same family, but it is not a standardised value across all brands. Body weight, technique, the pressure applied to the tongue and the type of skiing you do all influence the choice.

  • Flex 75 to 90: accessible boots, suited to progression or recreational skiing.

  • Flex 95 to 100: intermediate support for skiers who are already independent and want to keep some forgiveness.

  • Flex 105 to 110: more pronounced support for accomplished, heavier or more powerful skiers, depending on the model.

  • Flex 120 to 130: demanding boots intended for strong, athletic skiing and powerful edging.

These ranges are only indicative. A light, highly technical skier may prefer a different flex from a heavier skier of the same level.

Hawx XTD: freeride touring boots

The Atomic Hawx XTD range adds a ski/walk mechanism to combine downhill support with range of motion on the approach. The range is offered in two volumes: the Hawx Magna XTD 120 for wide feet and the Hawx Ultra XTD 130 Boa GW for narrow feet. They are more downhill-oriented than lightweight touring boots and should not be chosen solely because they have tech inserts or a walk mode.

Model Volume Flex Closure Walk mode Positioning
Hawx Magna XTD 120 102 mm 120 Buckles Free/Lock 4.5 Freetouring for powerful skiers with wide feet
Hawx Ultra XTD 130 Boa GW 98 mm 130 BOA on the shell Free/Lock 4.5, stated 54° range of motion Rigid, precise freetouring boot for narrow feet

Hawx Magna XTD 120: more room around the foot

The Hawx Magna XTD 120 carries over the generous-volume logic of the Magna family into a freetouring construction. Its flex of 120 makes it suitable for strong to expert skiers who can handle a firm boot on the descent. The Mimic Platinum liner is customisable, while the Free/Lock 4.5 mechanism frees the cuff for walking.

Hawx Ultra XTD 130 Boa: the stiffest and narrowest model

The Hawx Ultra XTD 130 Boa GW combines a 98 mm last, 130 flex and BOA closure. It is aimed at strong to expert skiers who prioritise downhill hold and whose foot shape suits a low-volume fit. Its stated 54° range of motion makes walking easier, but its flex and positioning mean it is not intended for those seeking maximum lightness.

Which Atomic Hawx should you choose?

  • First choose the Hawx Ultra, Hawx Prime or Hawx Magna according to the actual shape and volume of your foot.

  • Then compare the flex ratings that suit your build, technical ability and the intensity of your edging.

  • At the same flex, choose buckles for a more localised hold with zone-by-zone adjustability, BOA for a more even wrap over the instep while keeping buckles on the cuff, or Dual BOA for that enveloping feel across both the lower and upper parts of the boot.

  • The Hawx XTD for freetouring.
