Choosing a Rossignol all-mountain ski without picking the wrong model
The Rossignol range covers very different skis under the same versatile all-mountain concept. Some remain close to a wider piste ski, while others place greater emphasis on soft snow and ungroomed terrain. To choose well, you need to look beyond the brand and start with the way you ski: how often you head out of bounds, your speed, technical level and the amount of effort you are prepared to put in.
A skier who spends most of the day on groomers will benefit from choosing a responsive ski, with a moderate waist width and predictable behaviour on hard snow. This profile is more in keeping with the spirit of the Rossignol Arcade range. Conversely, skiers who regularly make the most of fresh snowfall and ungroomed areas can look towards the Rossignol Sender and Rossignol Rallybird families.
Do not choose based on your level alone
Two advanced skiers may need very different skis. One may be looking for a precise model to link turns on groomers at a good pace; the other may prefer a ski that is easier to pivot in chopped-up snow or through terrain features. Your level indicates what you are capable of controlling, but it does not define on its own the behaviour that will suit you.
Your build also matters. A heavier or more powerful skier may need more support to maintain stability as speed increases. A lighter skier will often benefit from avoiding an overly stiff construction or excessive length, even with a good technical level.
Width should reflect the days you actually ski
With Rossignol, as elsewhere, a few extra millimetres underfoot noticeably change the way the ski behaves. A relatively narrow model will be quicker from edge to edge and feel more natural on groomed trails. A wider ski will make soft-snow sections easier but will require greater commitment on hardpack.
The trap is choosing a ski for the best conditions you hope for rather than the conditions you encounter. If you mainly ski on piste and only occasionally venture to the sides, a model that is too freeride-oriented may feel cumbersome most of the time. Conversely, a ski that is too close to a piste model will quickly show its limits if you are constantly looking for untracked snow.
A Rossignol package in line with your skiing style
The binding supplied in the package should match the level of commitment of both the ski and the skier. A set-up designed for dynamic skiing must offer enough power transmission and a suitable adjustment range, without being unnecessarily strong for a lighter or progressing skier. Compatibility with your ski boots and adjustment according to weight, height, age and ability remain essential.
Compare other approaches to all-mountain skiing
- Salomon all-mountain skis for a range also split between precise handling and a more versatile, freer feel.
- Dynastar all-mountain skis for an approach centred on edge grip and the transition from piste skiing.
- Völkl all-mountain skis for skis generally aimed at skiers looking for more response and edge hold at higher speeds.
If piste skiing is becoming secondary in your practice and you are mainly looking for float, take a look instead at Rossignol freeride skis.
