A few millimetres at the waist are not enough to define a ski’s full behaviour, but here they do give an initial indication. The Mantra 80 W and 84 favour quick edge-to-edge transitions and maintain a strong presence on prepared snow. At 88 mm, the Mantra 88 models give more room for transformed snow, chopped-up snow, or the small pockets of powder found at the piste edge. The 96 mm M7 Mantra offers even more support in soft snow and is the most off-piste-orientated model in the range.
Mantra 80 W and Mantra 84 W: two different approaches with a piste focus
Mantra 80 W: the most accessible women’s model
With 80 mm at the waist, the Mantra 80 W is the narrowest model in this selection. Its traditional camber keeps grip on hard snow, while the double rocker makes pivoting easier when the snow turns softer or more uneven. Its construction combines a Multi Layer Woodcore with a Glass Frame and a Full Sidewall/Mini Cap build.
It is aimed at intermediate to advanced female skiers who mainly want to progress on piste while starting to spend more time on the piste edges. Compared with the broader Mantra models reinforced with Titanal, it is less demanding.
Mantra 84 W: more support for sporty skiing
The Mantra 84 W retains a moderate 84 mm width and remains strongly biased towards groomed snow. However, it adds a more sophisticated construction with a Multilayer Woodcore, Tailored Carbon Tips & Tails, a Tailored Titanal Frame and a 3D Radius Sidecut. The three radii allow the turn shape to vary depending on how hard the ski is driven.
The Mantra 84 W is better suited to skiers who want to keep precision on piste while having a ski that copes well with mixed snow and occasional forays beyond the groomed runs.
Mantra 84 or Mantra 88: where is the right balance between piste and off-piste?
Mantra 84: priority to turns on prepared snow
The Mantra 84 combines 84 mm at the waist with a Tip & Tail Rocker and the 3D Radius Sidecut. Völkl uses several radii along the edge: a shorter radius in the central section encourages tighter turns, while longer radii at the tip and tail support wider arcs.
Its relatively restrained width keeps it close to sporty piste skiing, but its double rocker and geometry also allow it to leave the groomers and enjoy fresh snow.
Mantra 88: more room for variable snow
With 88 mm underfoot, the Mantra 88 shifts the compromise slightly towards ungroomed terrain. Its construction combines a Multilayer Woodcore, Full Sidewall ABS, Tailored Carbon Tips, a Tailored Titanal Frame and a 3D Radius Sidecut.
Compared with the Mantra 84, the extra 4 mm at the waist provide more surface area for the beginnings of float in soft snow, at the cost of slightly less immediate edge-to-edge response. It is nonetheless designed to retain accurate piste handling and makes it easier to switch naturally between groomed snow, transformed snow and piste edges.
Mantra 88 W or M7 Mantra W: 88 or 96 mm underfoot?
Mantra 88 W: a more even split between piste and off-piste
The Mantra 88 W uses a 134-88-114 mm shape and a Tip & Tail Rocker. The 3D Radius Sidecut combines three radii and lets the turn shape evolve according to speed and edge angle. The Multilayer Woodcore is paired with a Full Sidewall construction.
With its 88 mm waist, it keeps quicker edge-to-edge response than the 96 mm M7 Mantra W. It is therefore better suited to skiers who regularly split their day between piste, broken snow and sections of light off-piste.
M7 Mantra W: more oriented towards soft and uneven snow
The M7 Mantra W increases to 96 mm at the waist and adopts 4 Radius Drive. This geometry uses four radius zones instead of the three radii found on the Mantra 84 W and 88 W. It is paired with a Tip & Tail Rocker, a Multilayer Woodcore, Tailored Carbon Tips and a Tailored Titanal Frame.
Its greater width provides more support when the snow becomes softer or more cut up. In return, it demands more commitment than a Mantra 80 W and is aimed at advanced to expert female skiers who want to give off-piste a significant role without completely giving up the pistes.
M7 Mantra: why the 96 mm model is not just a wider Mantra 88
Moving from the Mantra 88 to the M7 Mantra changes both the width and the shape. The M7 Mantra measures 96 mm at the waist and uses 4 Radius Drive, whereas the Mantra 88 remains with 3D Radius Sidecut. Völkl combines this geometry with a Multilayer Woodcore, Tailored Carbon Tips, a Tailored Titanal Frame and a Full Sidewall ABS construction.
The M7 Mantra therefore gives greater priority to changeable snow, chopped conditions and off-piste terrain. The central camber and reinforcements keep the ski predictable on hard snow, while the double rocker and 96 mm width make line adjustments easier when the terrain becomes uneven. It is aimed at advanced to expert skiers who can make the most of a relatively powerful construction.
The Mantra Jr for young skiers
The Mantra Jr takes the idea of a ski that can move from piste to piste edges, but its construction is designed to meet the needs of young skiers rather than simply mirror the adult models. With 86 mm at the waist, a traditional camber and a Tip & Tail Rocker, it retains grip on prepared snow while making pivoting easier in softer terrain.
It is aimed at young skiers in progression who are starting to vary their terrain more. Its width provides more support than a junior ski that is strictly piste-orientated, without turning it into a simple miniature version of the M7 Mantra.
How do you choose your Völkl Mantra?
For mainly piste-based skiing with occasional excursions to the edges, the choice first and foremost comes down to the Mantra 80 W, Mantra 84 and Mantra 84 W. The Mantra 88 and Mantra 88 W give more room to variable snow and are a more balanced option for regularly alternating between piste and off-piste. The 96 mm M7 Mantra and M7 Mantra W are better suited when ungroomed terrain makes up a significant part of the day and the skier already has a good technical level.
Width alone does not determine the right length. Ability level, build, preferred terrain and the search for manoeuvrability or stability also need to be taken into account.
